Range of Positive Stability

Does anyone know what the (calculated) range of positive
stability is for the M-382/3/4? This is done for IMS and
possibly other racing measurement systems. It's the angle of heel
at which a boat will continue over to the upside-down position.
I recall having seen it once and think it may have been 127
degrees. (Anything over 120 degrees is generally considered OK
for offshore racing.) Does anyone know if that's correct?

<div>Lenny, I don't know the specific number that you're looking for, but the ratios I've run (ballast/lwl, ballast/sa, etc) show that our boats are in the 'heavy' displacement envelope, and as a result the stability is beyond where I would tend to want to push the boat.Just wanted to butt in, we hadn't spoken since last fall, and I wanted to let you know that your efforts for our vessels has been a roaring success for me. I've found out what I need to do to get ready for our cruise, and have met several other owners, some of which are headed south as we speak. Thanks, Bill.PS-I'll try to find that number for you.....

<div>Lenny- According to the US Sailing 1996 "Performance Characteristics Profile of the North American IMS Fleet" the Morgan 382s range from 120.2 to 128.6. This value is specific for each boat(each boat is measured), however, there should be a narrow range of values for a boat type. There are no 383s or 384s listed which apparently indicates they are not raced where IMS rules are used. These later models should be similar except the taller rig would increase the inertia moment.
Although there are certainly better offshore boats, I believe the Morgan would be a safe bluewater boat if a 'survey' was done and any weaknesses dealt with

The positive stability in the US sailing book is for 5' draft boats. I asked Brewer if mine (6') would be better and he thought that was a toss up. Can't one have this calculated or determined some way. the other boat I was looking at was an Alberg 37. Great old boat, but small. But her range of positive stability is 140--makes the morgan look pretty meager.
