Quadrant to Rudder Shaft Key

I am in the process of installing a below deck hydraulic
autopilot on our 383 #45. After taking apart the quadrant to
inspect the lengh of the keyway in the rudder shaft, I was
looking thorough the Edson Catalog trying to figure out which
tiller arm to use for the autopilot connection. While reading
about the quadrant installed in the boat, I noticed that it was
strongly recommended that a stainless steel key, not a bronze
key, be used with the aluminum quadrant and stainless steel
rudder shaft set up of the Morgan.

Of course, a bronze key is what was installed by the factory.
Our boat is in freshwater so this is not the problem that it
might be for a boat in salt. Just wanted to pass this message
along to anyone that might be interested.

I'll be working on my rudder & Quadrant this spring & sail off the coast of Maine. Thanks for the tip. Just curious which Autopilot are you installing? Let me know how you like it.
Thanks,
Rod

<div>I am installing an AutoNAV A-1500 which uses a hydraulic linear drive and has a silicon oil dampened flux gate compass. I don't really want to turn this into a commercial but I am a dealer for this product. We decided to take on this line of Autopilots after some research and hearing good results from people using it on their boats. It is manufactured of commercial hardware and is well priced when compared to many of the better known autopilots. If you would like further information on the autopilot contact me at my e-mail address and I will mail you some specs.I plan to document the installation procedure as I install the pilot and will provide the information to anyone who might be interested. And yes, I am slightly biased toward this product which should be known upfront.
