Folks I have pulled out my 1979 Perkins 4-108 to repower. It was running last week. No knocks, no smoke, easy to start. Small leaks in the front and back of the engine. The transmission casing sheared off the back of the engine a couple of weeks back, (causing *no* damage to the flywheel or spline socket). So to use in a Morgan again, you will be needing a transmission. The transmission on mine is super simple, so if you want that for parts it is functional, but not attachable
.
I pulled some parts off to reduce the weight and bulk for removal. All came off easily and without incident. You can have the whole thing if you come get it or live in NC/VA. I will send parts for the cost of pack and ship for most parts. Will negotiate for harder to remove items.
It is the original engine and apparently has ~3500 hours on it since the hour meter was replaced and the engine was *presumably* rebuilt. I have about 700 hours on it the leak has not gotten noticeably worse over that time. The engine seems to be in OK shape if you want to reseal it. Most parts seem good enough to consider for reuse -- or if you just love diesel mechanics reseal and continue to use. The copper oil cooler (dual cooler, tranny side unused) leaked a couple years back and I soldered it to repair. That is holding, but I am not recommending that for anything other than a conversation piece for anyone I like.
The last 4 years I have been in the Albemarle Sound where salt levels are low to nil so even the cooling water systems might be worth considering given the cost.
I will sit on this thing for a couple of weeks before I haul it in for recycling so call anyone you think is nutty enough to want this thing!
