New Tech Stuff

hallelujah

Helene Schmidt
I thought a thread about New Tech would be nice. Since it isn't Morgan 38 specific, I thought I'd start the thread over here in the Pub.

To start it off, have you seen the article in SAIL magazine about sails with integrated solar panels?

I just read the article about sails that double as solar panels at Sail magazine. I think that's great, if not too expensive!

Everything starts off as too expensive

The Lantern project is giving away free units for folks to test. Their coverage offshore around the US looks pretty good.

The solar sails seem like a mistake initially. I seriously hope that they work well as it is also a great idea. We shall see what happens when the sails start flapping. They might be doing something to make the panels' angle to the sun optimal, since they are essentially mounted vertically. Are they using tiny prisms to redirect the rays? Also, how do they keep the wiring out of harm's way?

Hi Rick,
You make a lot of great points. I recall a picture showing that the wiring goes down the mast through the cabin top. They have lots of things to figure out... like how would they reef the main?

Ha ha, I'm wondering what happens when a short circuit develops on the sail. I guess it should provide a large distress flare all by itself. No need to shoot one in the air as overkill!
