Mischief: Fuel Vent Caps & Hoses

Greetings, fellow Morgan owners!

While I've read most of what's been contributed to the site, this is my first post after firming up the purchase of a 1979 382, Mischief, at the end of September 2022. The survey by Al Kesner came back pretty clean with no major concerns. I'm excited to get her home in the spring but I've got a few items to cross off the to-do list before sailing her back to Saint John, New Brunswick from near the NH and ME border. I did visit the boat following the survey where the previous owner and I executed the necessary paperwork, however, failed to take some measurements that would better help me prepare in the coming months. Being the supportive, knowledgeable gang that you are, I figured I'd ask a few questions here to save the 12 hr return road trip.

First questions are related to fuel vent caps - Any benefit to the flush mount style or is that strictly a cosmetic thing? From what I can find I believe the hose size is 5/8. I'd love a recommendation on quality replacement caps as mine are due. Reputable brands will take priority over less expensive newer producers with questionable 'stainless steel'.

Second question is related to hoses. What size would the marine rubber covered reinforced hose from seacock to strainer be be? I also need hoses for the head. Ribbed hose and rubber hose for waste discharge, and the hose to the water tank. Another note from the survey suggests replacing the valves for the waste system also. Any insight into the number and types of valves here?

I'm sure I'll have more ideas / questions for your valuable insights in the months to come.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you're willing to provide.

Sincerely,

Gavin

I'm not sure what you are referring to as Fuel vent caps. Are you talking about the vent fittings on the transom just under the gunnel for fuel, water and holding? As far as thruhull and hose sizes, you will have to measure each application individually. Changes surely will have been made to every boats as to render common sizes unusable. One piece of advice in the way of hoses is to find a commercial or industrial hose supplier. Their selection and prices will be much better then Marine suppliers.

Where will you be home-porting Mischief?

I use a vent shaped like this. https://www.fisheriessupply.com/perko-tank-vent-with-splash-guard/0506dp4chr Mine may not be Perko because a lot of Perko stuff is chrome plated zinc or bronze. Mine are stainless. I moved my fuel tank vents to fairly high in the cockpit to protect them from water intrusion. Also, the old vents tended to corrode, which would plug them up around the screen. I also removed the water vents from the stern, again to limit saltwater entry. My water vent lines now just run aft and terminate inside the aft end of the coamings. Any overflow just goes into the bilge. Finally, a few years go I had to replace the main fuel vent hose. You can easily figure out the size by looking on the tank entry point. I doi think it might be 5/8". Mine had degraded somehow over the years and was blocking air flow. That led to occasional and always inconvenient shut down of the engine. Why? Don't know, but somehow the lift pump on the Perkins couldn't fight the vacuum being created. What is Mischief's hull number? I have always wanted to sail the Canadian maritime provinces, ever since I read Grey Seas Under by Mowat. I just read a book about the schooner Bluenose and the Fisherman's Cup, A Race for Real Sailors. You folks from up there are storied seamen and women.

Good points to consider, Jim. Thanks
for chimming in.

Home port will be in Saint John, New Brunswick I hope. I'm on a few waiting lists.

I was looking at that exact vent, Terry! ...but will follow your lead and opt for something stainless I'm thinking.

Hull id: MRY22112M79C

As for sailing the Maritimes, if you're ever up this way be sure to let me know. I'm always up for an adventure!

Side note: I'll probably be looking for some crew in the spring to help get Mischief home ;)

Or a convoy could be fun too!

Check the Perko vent before you decide against it. It may be stainless. I just don't remember. And, come to think of it, I have other Perko equipment and it has lasted 43 years.
