Max-Prop

tfrere

Thomas McNulty
I own a Max-Prop but have never installed it. I purchased it used a few years ago, sent it to PYI to be rebuilt, got it back and when I tried to install it, I found out the shaft was the wrong size. The guy I bought it from said it was a 1.25" shaft and a rough measurement when I got it showed he was correct. However, I found it was designed for a metric shaft and did not fit. So, it has been sitting in my garage in a box all shined up and pretty for the last 3 or 4 years.
Now that I am changing my engine, I decided to send it back to PYI for the proper shaft hub to be installed.

My question to all of you: Is anyone else using a Max-Prop or some type of feathering prop? If so, how do you like it? Have you noticed a difference from the fixed blade prop? How does it perform in reverse?

I tried to do a search on this site for Max-Prop and the search engine eliminated the word "Max" because it is either too short or it is too common.
Thanks

Tommy
Make sure the prop will fit in the keg aperture. I remember discussions in the past where owners had problems getting some props to fit.

Tommy, in the Search box if you put quotes around a phrase, it'll search for that exact phrase.
So for example, I searched on "max-prop" and there were several pages of results. Have you tried that?
Cheers,
Mark

It will fit but just barely. I shortened my shaft to make it fit but then found it was the wrong shaft diameter.

It is a 16" diameter. However, it is longer than a standard fixed blade prop. I am concerned about the distance between the skeg and the rudder.

Tommy
16" is good for the overall diameter. Mark is correct. Search the archives for the max-prop. Someone had a problem getting one to fit in the past.

Jim

Check an article in the archives by Ron Hoogewerf. He described how he installed his Max-Prop, which was a 16" dia., and he gave the shaft dimensions required to clear the rudder.

Hmmmm. I think it was the Spring 1996 or so issue of the old Newsletter or the like. It was located in some legacy folder. Can't remember the exact title though. "How to install a Max-Prop"?? I'm pretty sure that "Max-Prop" was in the title. I gave up trying to find it on the site. Maybe somebody can tell me where/if we can gain access to that article. Thanks in advance!
Rick

My cursory search for the original Morgan 38 Owner's Group Newsletters failed to find them also, so I uploaded my copies of the text version of these newsletters to a new thread in the Morgan 38 Background, History, Reference forum.

Ron Hoogewerf's article "Installing a Feathering Prop" is in Newsletter No3 - 1998 Spring.
