Mainsheet deck block

schlepper

John m. Harrison
My sheave on the Mainsheet deck turning block has broken. I believe it's a Shaeffer? Does anyone have close access to their boat to see if there is a stamping or model # on that thing? I am over 2 Hours from the boat and am heading down at the end of this week to work on it and would like to order it online and get it before I head down. Of all the photos I have of the systems on the boat, that one was escaped my camera lens. Thanks in advance for any help ya'll can provide.

The main sheet blocks on my boat 382 Hull 80 are Harken. No numbers, here are some pictures.
Good luck
Frank

Hi John,
Check out Rigging Only in Massachusetts for cheek blocks. I’m not on the boat now
but can look at mine tomorrow for you.
Rick

Noticed that I left my phone on Xanadu, so I can get a pic to you. The block top cheek is aluminum but the bottom mounting plate appears to be ss. It has a one piece delrin sheave. Line size is 1/2 ". The top cheek measures 62mm port to stbd. Distance between bolt hole centers fore and aft is about 90mm. Hope this helps!
Rick

Hey Jim, no, I'm talking about the block (I think the right term is a cheek block) that is mounted on the deck forward of the traveller (383). I don't think you have that on the 382?

Frank Buck: You have the same Harken main sheet blocks as do I. Have you ever questioned the strength of the attachments? It connects to the traveller car and the boom with 1/4" shackles. With all the sheaves, the strain on the main sheet is low, but in an uncontrolled jibe (which you should avoid, but stuff happens), the whole load would be carried by two 1/4" shackles. No way to increase size. I have installed Harken high resistance 6mm shackles, with a MWL of 2700 and work hard to avoid crash jibes.

I replaced the shackle that attaches my sheet blocks to the traveler with a 1/4" dyneema soft shackle. That soft shackle has a breaking strength of over 4,000 lbs. If you're not familiar with them: soft shackles are easy to make, super versatile and ridiculously strong. I use them all over the place. The main reason I replaced the metal shackle was to save the traveler, as the metal was really wearing on the traveler bail.

You can see the shackle in the following video, at about the halfway mark.

Hi John,
This is unrelated, but I have a question about the Perkins main seal replacement you did a while ago. On my engine, I notice that the bell housing joint at the engine block has alignment dowels, but it looks as if no dowels are installed in the bell housing to trans adapter (next joint aft). It seems that, if there is no flange lip, or dowels, in this joint to establish alignment, upon removing the adapter, I will have to do a dial indicator assisted alignment at reassembly. Do the studs/bolts (hidden dowels?) fit tight enough to trust, or will I need to indicate the beast?
I noticed that the transmission splined shaft is showing some wear at the max depth of insertion into the coupler plate inverse spline. Its kind of a ring of indentation in each spline cog. Looks like maybe some non-concentric alignment at the above joint, since the transmission plate lip fits very nicely snug into this adapter bore. What do you think?

I have replaced my blocks with ball bearing ones , just a little smoother ..
Big QUESTION Im trying to get the 3 bladed prop off in the water , Its impossible ! there is no room . Can i on the next haul out cut some rudder clearance 2 inches so i can get the prop off ? to prop shield it ?? cut grind/ re glass ???

the stainless rudder post is on the front side of the rudder, right behind the glass. No way to cut into that and inadvisable to try.
