Louisiana Summertime Sailing

tfrere

Thomas McNulty
Typical southern Louisiana summers are filled with afternoon thunderstorms and blistering heat so our sailing days are fewer this time of year. However, late evening/sunset sails can be quite nice. Yesterday was one of those hot and humid days so Kathleen and I elected to go for an evening sail. I was soaked with sweat by the time I got the boat untied and backed out of the slip at 5:30 PM. Once on Lake Pontchartrain, it was quite comfortable. The winds were ~10 knots out of the southwest and the temperature, while still warm, was much more comfortable than on land. Only three other boats were visible on the lake. As sunset approaches we have to be close to shore in order to get back to the dock while there is still light. Our twenty minute trip up Bayou Castine (where our marina is located) can get quite dark and has many overhanging trees to avoid.
There aren't many things we would rather do than listen to good music while sailing and watching sunsets on Lake Pontchartrain.
Just sharing....

Glad to hear your sailing in spite of the heat. Bonnie and I just spent a weekend out on Long Island Sound without a breath of wind in two days. Of course a nice Southwesterly came up when we were 5 minutes away from the end of our trip. Oh well.
