I have started the redo of the cabin sole

stnick

lee nicholas
Ive used Citrus Strip , apply thick , open the ports , Come back the next day and scrape all the 30 year Varnish off and Vacume up the dirt ! . Light sand so the holly starts to look clean again.
Than 4 coats of Min Wax Poly with 4 table spoons of Penatrol and at least that many Linseed oil for traction. After the 3 rd coat its looking great but the 4th coat light sand in between of course, After the 4th coat looks like a gym floor !
The traction is amazing !!!! Ive shown other sailors at my dock and they have started to copy the process.
Ill try to get a pix up But im so bad at being sucessful at that that i always just give up .
This deck method is a method i learned for the Sabre sailors when i had one.

Hi Lee,
I have three questions, if you don't mind.
Are the tbsp measurements based on 1 gallon of Min Wax Poly or 1 quart? Can the mixture stay pre-mixed or must you mix only when you are ready to apply? Is the light sanding done between all coats or only 3 and 4?
I am getting ready to tackle this job also and your process sounds good.
Thanks in advance,
Rich

Hi Lee - I’ll be doing this soon & would love to see some photos. I sent you an email a few days ago that if you email me the photos, I will post them here if that is causing you problems.
Thanks
Mark

I have no idea if This picture has been loaded ?
I did want it larger , I have not got a clue !?
Any way Im refinishing my cabin sole . Citrus strip, Scrape , vacume , light sand , 4 coats of polyurthane with linseed oil and Penetrol. Non slip and shinny !

I DID IT !!!! YEAH !!!!!
ALL mesurements based on one quart of polyurethane
add linseed oil ( traction) and penetrol for smooth flow !
I used a ALLWAY Tool from Amazon 15.66 / 6 changable blades.
perfect for caprail , hand rails or any teak with varnish usually out doors i use a heat gun with the scraper

Mix by the quart Yes it will stay mixed. Light sand between every coat . I use Jenn Weld foam brushes only If your traction is not enough for you add more linseed oil , But the oil makes it dry slower.
in Florida I run coat one place a barrel fan on the deck and go home, next day its dry . So i do a coat a day , Unless it rains and the humidy makes it tacky, Than go home come back the next day!

You should have excellent traction in bare feet , stocking feet and deck shores wet deck or not !

Holds No dirt or dust ! Very hard shiney surface , but great Taction like a gym floor !
If you have a doubt just pull up the board over the depth sounder , opposite the head V door . Pull it up strip it light sand, and coat with the poly and linseed oil. After 3-4 coats
step on it yourself in deck shoes dry , deck shoes wet ! Than bare feet , than with your sox on !
If its not enough traction add more linseed oil and coat again.
Now the linseed oil can retard the drying by a day , But it will dry !!Thats what the fast drying poly does !! Good luck
Ive used this method 20 some years .,some time with varnish sometimes with poly
