Have any of my Morgan friends heard of Signal K ?

Seems that Nema 2000 is old fashioned and will not handle the future?
I really do not understand this at all.

Special K yes ... Signal K... no. Sorry

Just Googled it.

I think only programmers would understand... or am I wrong? I've done a bit of programming in Fortran & Pascal (even hexidecimal), but I don't know JSON, Java Script, C++ that they reference. But, I'd be willing to learn it if I could make a bunch of money.:p

All the best,
Helene

I have heard about it, but don't know much. It's open source... I know that much. So, that's pretty awesome. Hopefully it stays that way, but I doubt it.

Panbo Website posted a good article about Signal K. Here is a link to the post - NMEA Okays Signal K

As I understand Signal K it is a communication standard for sharing vessel data via Internet, Wifi, Bluetooth, etc. Signal K will better enable computers, tablets, and phones to interface with your NMEA2000 network. It will allow things such as...
  • Share way points from your GPS to a buddy boat via internet connection
  • Pull data from multiple race boats via internet connection and to allow comparison of data back at clubhouse after race.
  • Control autopilot from phone or tablet via bluetooth connection.
.NMEA2000 (N2K) is an industry standard for transmitting data between transducers, instruments, displays, etc via wires. Signal K will access N2K data via a certified gateway. N2K & Signal K are intended to work hand in hand. I do not believe one standard will not usurp the other.

Hope this information is helpful.

Signal K sounds good for most things listed. The governments and insurance companies can benefit too, knowing where you are and how your boat is functioning, like speed over ground, holding tank levels, how often the bilge pump is running, fuel consumption, etc. This could make it easier for them to enforce laws or adjust insurance premiums. Maybe there will be a future requirement for all boaters to scan their UPC's into the system too - things like safety equipment on board, new replacement parts or maybe food items or beverages purchased, etc. This will enable you to never miss an expiration date on a flare or the sea sickness pills. Also it will be good to get lots of advertising and market survey pop-ups that will show up on your displays and interrupt your navigation/weather info. Hopefully that stuff won't happen, but....
