Forida Keys to Yucatan Peninsula???

I know there are folks here that must know and travel thses waters.
I am looking for any info for a trip from the Keys to the Yucatan Peninsula. Dad lives about an hour and half (by car) South of Cancun.
My father is buying a boat located in the Keys and lives in Mex. Neither he nor I have sailed there before. We need to get the boat to his home. I think the hurricane season seems to be starting now, so after that of course. Boat is 31'. Seems pretty well equiped, I will find out soon.
Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks!
Mitchell

Hi Mitchell,
We went from Key West to Isla Mujeres back in the end of March / beginning of April 2015. It took us 67 hours in our Morgan 38. We had winds 17 to 22 knots and winds either off the stern quarter or directly behind us. Waves were 6-8 feet. Don't have any waypoints but we were about 12 miles off of Cuba so as to minimize current against us. We hired Chris Parker for weather routing and Gulf Stream advice. Money well spent in our opinion. The only thing he neglected to mention was the amount of shipping traffic rounding the western tip of Cuba. The sailing was quite lively and we opted to motor sail the last 8 hours in order to make a bee line for the bottom of Isla. Otherwise we would have had to tack down wind for a more comfortable ride.
This time of year may have lighter winds but more chances for squalls.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Ken for your insight! I will let you know how things go, if they indeed do. I'm having a hard time getting any info from the broker on the boat Dad wants. Dad is a cash buyer and READY. But it doesn't seem to carry much weight these days. Maybe to many high dollar yachts trading hands? Bigger commisions elsewhere, I don't know.
I'll keep at it.
Thanks, Mitchell
