Engine access thru port lazarette.

Hi folks, I own hull number 5 and there isn't a bulkhead between the port lazarette and the engine. I'm not sure if it has been modified or what was there from the factory. It isn't
ideal since the contents of the lazarette can end up on the engine and shaft.

Can someone tell me what was originally there? Anyone have other ideas for a bulkhead with access? Photos would be great.

Many thanks,

Marc

There should be a bulkhead to separate the engine from stowage area. There is at least on Sonata. In our boat this is simply a plywood panel that extends aft to the aft end of the area. Someone in the past also laced some line in beyond this to prevent stuff from shifting towards the engine/Trans. Are you saying the area is wide open to the engine room?

I can't send pictures because my boat is under repair. But... I have a bulkhead(plywood) that hangs from three bolts through the cockpit wall. it has an outward turning lip (2x2) at the bottom. On that lip sits a shelf that goes across to the hull, above the engine thru hull. That shelf then sits on a vertical plywood piece glassed to the hull (again, using a 2x2 lip.) In this way, I have a large shelf to stow up to 3 jerry jugs, plus the garbage container behind the trash trap door. I have a hole in the shelf above my engine thru huill so I can reach down to open and close the seacock. Works well.

On my '82 383 there was a nice large shelf there. At least 2x4 in size. The waste basket (access thru galley trap door) sat on a lower shelf just aft of the galley bulkhead.
Its worth rebuilding for storage use. I could stow a honda 2000 gen or an outboard, 3 bags of lines, 1 bag o' anchor chain, and my AB Reefer unit was aft of all that nonsense.
It would be a likely spot for an owner to put 3-4 house storage batteries. Also the port aft deck drain is right there, and they always leak. It likely turned to rotted dust over the years.

If you still need some pics, I snapped a couple on my boat.
The angles are:
  • looking down into the lazarette, the enginebay oriented at the top of the pic (the raw water strainer is mounted to the plywood that separated the laz and the engine bay.
  • looking in the hatchway from the Galley
  • From the Stbd Qtrberth engine hatchway. The lights are mounted on the back side of the plywood separating the Laz from the engine.

I'll probably be at my boat for the next two or three days, if you want and specific photos, I am happy to provide!

Toph3r,
Thanks for the informative photos. When Terry described it, I thought it sounded similar to (what I thought was) the hack-job installation of that bulkhead on my boat. But mine is identical to yours...

Is it only me or is the idea that there would be thru-bolts into the cockpit wall just above the floor bizarre to anyone else? That can’t seriously have been the stock solution from the factory, can it?

Finding that locker all musty after a storm was driving me nuts, so about a month ago I glued a stringer inside the locker, and now I fasten the bulkhead to that. No more leaky holes.

Thanks Toph3r, that was helpful to see. There are 4 holes in my cockpit side that I couldn't figure out and I now see that the bulkhead at one time hung from them.

Travis, I was considering doing the same thing and fill in the 4 holes. My goal is to make the bulkhead/divider removable in case I need to get to that side of my Yanmar.

Marc,
If you come up with a more “removable” method than 4 screws, I’d be interested to hear that. I thought about using wing nuts so I can access it in a hurry without a tool, but I don’t want them to snag on gear as it gets pulled in and out. Settled for screws for now.

In my case, this project began with relocating the alcohol stove tank and air pump to the area under the floor of that locker. While gaining access I realized that the floor of the locker was ‘hanging’ from the aforementioned bulkhead (which itself was hanging from those 4 bolts in the cockpit). Yikes!

It took some sitting and thinking but I’ve got it put back together such that the bulkhead wall or the floor of the locker can be removed, separately, without interfering with one another. Last thing will be to add a net of some type at the inboard aft part of the locker.

If you put some butyl on the 4 bolts through the cockpit wall, they won't leak. I find it perfectly stable and solid as long as the outboard edge of the floor is itself bolted to a stringer glassed to the hull. I regularly carry 3 jerry jugs of diesel there, about 105 pounds.

Marc,
Well I just returned from Sonata. I took some photos for what it's worth. I don't know if you still need to see what's done on my boat but here they are...
Hope it isn't to late,
Mitchell

From cockpit you can see the (4) round head bolts securing through there
The pad eyes were installed for safety harness tethers by the PO
