Companionway steps

I too have to vacuum them regularly too, and find them annoying. I am contemplating changing/redesigning them. I am tired of wrestling the whole massive thing out of the way when I need in there. I am contemplating the following:
3/4 balsa ply to replace the 24x50ish panel, and an aluminum railed ladder with some kind of tread -- aluminum, wood, or perhaps the original treads, narrowed by an inch or so and now maybe with a butyl fill in the groove, for the ladder part.
Math says, depending on the tread, it will drop the weight of the whole thing by just over 50%.

Anyone else tried to redesign the stairs?

This works well for me.

I considered having the steps alone without the backboard then the realization of having the two separate sections steps and backboard to put someplace safe while underway would have been rather awkward to say the least. Now being divided into four separate openings I can easily remove the top set of stairs open the top one or both doors to check the engine then, if needs be remove the lower steps to open the two lower doors giving me total access to the front of engine.

Years ago the three grooves in the steps were filled in and sanded smooth. Deck Thread pads were then installed. Much better traction and less build up of debris.

I ordered the Seadeck today! Thank you! So I decided to make a hatch in the door panel. I’ll install battens on the door for hatch stop. From here, I can easily get to the dipstick, and I’m going to add a utility light to brighten it up. I’m also using closed cell foam on top of this panel. Believe it or not, Fortissimo had the original insulation pads! Next winter I’ll make it prettier, for now it’s a rush to get on the water. Thanks everyone!View attachment IMG_5333.jpeg

The slots don't bother me. I've thought of rebuilding the steps just because they are old and the veneer is peeling. But I like the idea of removable steps with a swing out door underneath. I think that could be done with the original steps, and making a teak door that would make it look original when closed. I would really like that.

Don't stop there. Try a sheet roll and make a pattern and cut with a razor knife) on the cockpit seats. I did, then a few years later the weather decks and the coach roof. No regrets!

I was in Defenders in CT for their annual sale yesterday. The photo shows Threadmaster stair threads in five colors. They are peal & stick.
