Companionway Doors

I know many may prefer the drop boards but I just like having doors. Check out these I made with mahogany frames and teak panels.

Tom,

Those look great! Are those take apart hinges so that you can lift up and remove? Do you have an overlap in the center to help keep out rain/spray? They look very sturdy.

Thanks Timothy

Yes, they are stainless steel freezer hinges. They come apart and the doors can be placed in the cabin when sailing. They do overlap at the point where they meet. The only problem I have is the opening at the top where the companionway cover meets the door. I didn't cut them as tight as I would have liked so I'm worried about the dirt daubers this coming summer.

Great looking doors.

Yeah, good luck with the wasps and dirt daubers - we have lots of them in Georgia and they get thru the smallest openings. They build mud nests in the sails, even inside the lockers. Wasps love to build nests inside the dorade boxes (I screened the opening to the cabin).

Mud daubers (and moths) don't like moth balls. Before I lived aboard, I would put a small handful of moth balls in several small empty plastic margarine tubs (with lids) and punch lots of holes in lids with ice pick. Place them under both ends of your sail cover (i still put couple here), in lockers (cedar best for clothes lockers), on counters, and/or inside companionway, etc. Mud daubers will (mostly) stay away....when you open the boat up and put the tubs (temporarily) in a large zip lock bag, the odor clears out quickly.

The doors look good! I used the same hinges and elected to use Lexan for the door inserts. Having lexan allows you to see if someone is trying to get on the boat while you are onboard. Either way is much better than drop-in boards in my opinion.

Cabinway Doors

Jim,
That's some fine looking cockpit cushions. Are those custom made?

I also like the look of the doors with the lexan. Do you have inserts to cover them to keep the light out or to provide privacy?

Is the speaker next to your companionway cover for a vhf or music? Is it wireless?

I'm asking too many questions. I'll stop now.

Tommy

Question 1, Custom made by Bottomsiders. Question 2, no covers because as I said, I like to see if anyone is attempting to come aboard. Question 3, wired speaker for VHF/SSB. After installing the cockpit VHF, I used it seldom. Music comes through cockpit speaker outboard of the wheel and low.

old subject revisited: companionway doors. Jim, your post of december '10: do you have any more pictures of your doors? i want to replace the drop boards and need to know where to mount the hinges which dicates how to frame the doors? did you modify the drop board slots or can you still use them?
