Cockpit drain

First, I'm in middle of a rehab, so please ignore the mess.

While in the lazarette of my M35 I found that the cockpit drain was lead to a below the water through hull with no seacock. The cockpit floor is about 3 - 5" above the water line and the through hull about 3" below the water line, so keeping a downward slope on the line is pretty difficult with fittings and elbows. It's pretty important that the drain not hold water up here where it freezes in the winter.

Was it normal for Morgan to NOT provide a seacock for this drain? I can't imagine that the current install is factory though with the pile of epozy/resin on the through hull (see pics).

Thanks

Hi Stephen - can you explain what we are looking at in the photos?
In the upper photo, is the hole the discharge 3” below the water line? I’m trying to understand what the pipe-like thing angling up to the left is?

On the bottom photo, is the top of the picture pointed “up”? and the clump of that epoxy looking stuff is where the thru hull fitting is?

If so, that piping does appear to be problematic with freezing and it’s hard to imagine that’s the way the factory would have installed it.

On our M38s, the cockpits drain to a factory installed “torpedo tube” that runs horizontally from one side of the hull to the other, just above the water line. No valves.

Cheers,

Mark,

The upper picture is the outlet. It has a “reverse” scoop over it. I suppose it is supposed to help draw water out as the boat is moving.

The lower photo was taken in lazerette about a foot forward of stern and looking forward. The compartment floor was removed (longitudinal frames still in place) as was a second water tank. The glob is the through hull, the larger hose is the disconnected cockpit drain and the smaller hose is outlet from manual bilge pump.

Morning Steve. I would put a proper hull-thru below the water line. Backing plate,a proper valve and than hoses.
