Cockpit drain grates

<div>Last fall there was some discussion regarding where to find replacement grates on the cockpit drains. I didn't pay too much attention at the time because I didn't need them. Now I do ! If anyone has a location where These can be ordered, I'd appreciate the info. Thanks

Three years ago I got them from Morgan in Florida. They weren't cheap. I paid $10.00 for each one and bought six. I also replaced the drains on the deck. They did not fit well in the head for some reason. I have heard that other people have gotten the run around when they called Morgan about them, but I didn't have any problem. By the way the replacements are stainless steel.

Why not make the grates? I puchased a quater inch thick piece of lexon at the local HOME DEPOT cost was less than $3.00. With a jig saw or coping saw cut out the rough size of the grate, drill holes for the fastening screws and either cut drain slots into the plastic or drill 1/4 inch holes in a pattern that allows the water to pass but keeps the tree junk from going half way thru the drain tubes and getting stuck. To make the grates translucent sand both sides with a fine sand paper, take your new grates down to the boat and with an orbital sander shape the grate to fit the receiving fitting. If you're really in a hurry you can make all four at the same time with a good pattern in less than an hour. Spend the rest of the money on some good microbrew and enjoy the afternoon. Lexon is tough plastic and will bend but is difficult to break. Mine have worked fine for three seasons.Good luck

Chip. Great idea. Tomorrow morning I'm off to Home Depot. Will give some of those 30-40 tools I own a workout
Thanks

Ihad replaced mine many times. These are a standard swimming pool catalog item and should be available from a swimmiung poll supply store in your area. I finally made mine from alluminum nad had them anodized.

The cockpit greats get killed by feet & UV. Take them to a stainless steel fabricator in your area to use as a pattern for some HD ones. Whats a few extra dollars. My cockpit drains leaked into the bilge for years. It wasnt untill I removed the athwartship drain pipe and replumbed the drains via standard thrrough hull fittings that I discovered the leak.

This is exactly what I did! Actually my neighbor on a cat was building interior cabinetry for his Prout, gave me a good chunk of left over. They work great, look great. It's ironic, cuz I was getting ready to fork over the bucks for Stainless. This works just as well and it was free!
