Cabinet Latches

I have knobs, but I have been admiring the latches on Rick Noddin's 384, Xanadu. His have a nice finger-size hole, with radiused edges inside and out, providing access to a nice spring-loaded latch.

I think a setup with the hole might be what I am looking for. Are there pictures of it? The knobs don't work, as every cabinet empties itself when I go out on the ocean. I want something simple and not too expensive, since I have to do a lot of cabinets.

I browse West Marine's website and I see lots of expensive and complicated options, when I just want the doors to stay shut.

I'm wondering if this is too flimsy - http://www.amazon.com/Amerock-Elbow..._UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=0EMADJEKX8H0DA8WRR82

I did the inexpensive thing and did not alter appearance. Hook inside door and on interior wall. Bungy cord to connect when you wish.

Hook & Eye:

Example from Stargazer (finger-hole latches were all gone when I purchased the boat):

Dana's cabinet doors all came with the hook and eye latches like Chris's. They hold the doors shut in the roughest conditions. Now if we could only keep the cushions in place!

Jim

Yes about the cushions ...maybe slide on/off hinges that connect in the front underside the cushions? Especially the forward facing settee cushion on port

My cushions have velcro sewn on the bottom. It seems to hold well. Of course that might be helped by everything that fell out of the cabinets and landed on them.

Velcro works fine for us, both on bottom and back support cushions.

Dick
How do you get the Velcro attached to the cushion. My cushions have a wood backing. The forward facing settee cushion slides to starboard even with Velcro it breaks free from its weight. We thought about a latch but we prefer something soft while being secure.

The wooden backing on that cushion is to allow it to form a double berth on the port side of the salon.

So, if you are going out into swell, you could just place it in its fore-aft horizontal position, where it is held in place by the table base.

Chris

Agreed Chris Velcro is on all other cushions. The back piece in front of galley was in place as a berth while offshore.

Dick

Yes
I know...but I was wondering how anyone has managed to secure that one from sliding.
We used to sleep there...still do occasionally but got used to the v birth

We secure the plywood backed piece in front of the galley with two strips of the heavy duty velcro. Seems to work fine. The rest of the cushions are held by snaps that still come loose when the boat is pounding into a chop.

Attached are a few photos of Dana's cabinet latches. They are all original equipment as far as I know.

Yes we have snaps on all the cushions except the wood backed forward facing cushion in front of galley. Heavy duty Velcro didn't work. Maybe if we screwed it into the wood or figured out some heavy duty snaps ...

No, seriously!

A friend told me he thought my "picture-hanger" suggestion was a joke ...

I think it would work:

Attach a picture-hanger wire between the top and bottom of the cushion wooden back a foot or so inboard from the port settee back. Attach what would be the "wall-hook" to the front surface of the galley bulkhead, behind the cushion, and adjust the wire tension so that you have to use a bit of force to loop the wire over the hook - by compressing the end of the cushion against the port-side salon back.

When the boat heels over to starboard, which is the only direction you care about, the cushion "hangs" like a picture and is prevented from sliding loose.

Lots of ways to vary the design but get the same functionality.

I may try it myself one of these years!

Chris

I might try it if...it doesn't rattle while under way with the motor :) it's better than having it slam into the other side when we are sailing a little to aggressively.

Hi There!
If you get a chance could you post a bit about how you sail/sailed your Morgan?
I read some old newsletters from 99' ...I created a racing section... I would like to get some of those interested to post about racing.

Medical Velcro not your daddy velcro . Used on arm and leg splints . My wife worked for the VA hospital in Tampa she knows good Velcro
