Boom End Sheaves

jimcleary

James M. Cleary
Just completed a set of replacement boom end fitting sheaves for Ray Cook in Texas. While turning those an extra set was made and are available for anyone who needs them. These are the plastic sheaves that fit on either side of the metal outhaul sheave on the Kenyon boom. If you need them, send me an address an I'll put them in the mail.

Jim

I'm mailing a set out to Scott Brown and my spare set out to Tony Carey. If more people need them, I'll turn out some more. All together I think I've sent out about a dozen sets so far.

Jim

Thanks for you efforts, Jim, I really appreciate your craftsmanship...My set fits perfectly. I had the boom and end fittings powder coated over the winter, and it now looks better than new.

Jim, I am in need of a set. Both are worn out and starting to jam.
Let me know the cost w/ shipping.

i will look to see if I still have the dimensions. Two things, if I have them, I'll make you a set. If I don't, I'll need you to remove the old and give me the measurements. There is a bronze bushing pressed into the sheaves which you will need to retain to put in the new ones. I'm going to have to dig out my old workbooks to see what I wrote down.

Thank you for providing me with a lovely evening sitting next to the fire leafing through my old workbooks. It was interesting to see all my drawings and sketches. I eventually found the numbers for the sheaves. 1 3/4" outside diameter and 9/16" inside diameter for the bronze race. If you could please verify those numbers with what you need, I will get right on making them for you.

Jim

Bill

Please double check that my dimensions are correct for your boom fitting and I will knock you out a set.

Jim

Jim,
I am having trouble getting the boom end cover off. The stainless steel bolts are corroded to the aluminum boom. I won't be able to get back to working on it until next week. I plan to use some torch heat to try and break it loose. Sorry to be so late getting back to you. Been tied up with other problems. I hope to get the problem solved next week and will get back to you.

No problem. I remember when I went to remove the end fitting, I ended up having to drill out the old bolt then retap the holes. No rush. whenever you get to it.

With my Christmas projects completed, I finally had time to knock out a bunch of the outboard boom sheaves. I had to go with the dimensions from my old workbook which should be correct. The outside diameter is 1 3/4" diameter by 1/2" thick and with a 9/16" center hole which will accept the bronze bushing from the existing sheaves. Tomorrow I will get mailing envelopes and send them out. I only ask that you refund me the shipping costs. If your particular sheaves are a different dimension, please let me know.

Jim

Thanks Jim,
Haven't gotten the end plate off yet but will soon or latter. As far as I can tell the size looks correct. Let me know your cost and I'll send you a check. I think you have my address and phone number.

The sheaves are in the mail. The shipping envelope and the postage was $7. Let me know how they work.

Happy New Year.

Jim

Just an FYI for anyone who finds this thread in the future if Jim is no longer in the business, Garhauer made a set for me in aluminum with a bronze bushing for a very reasonable price. I've attached the drawings I sent them, they work great.

Just so everyone knows, I am not in the business of making the boom sheaves, I do it for fun. They may not be as fancy as Garhauer's but they work and they seem to last rather well. If you need a set, let me know. You pay the shipping.

Bill,
Were you able to get the end plate off? I think I may have to drill the screws out and it's not something I'm looking forward to. Penetrating oil hasn't worked so far. I think the screws may be welded in from time and different metals. Just curious what you had to do to get the screws out to remove the end plate.
Thanks,
Shane

Shane, a little "judicious" heat may help. A small propane torch. Make sure any flammable materials are not near. Heat a little and try light tapping with a hammer and punch or something. Also, for penitrating fluid, 50/50 acetone and automatic transmission oil. A few drops go a long way, but works better than any commercially available oil.
Good luck,
Mitchell

Shane, I am still trying. Will try some heat next. I think propane gets to about 1900 degrees and aluminum melts at about 1400 degrees so I' going to take it slow. It will be some time before I get to try again. I'll let you know.
Bill

Aluminum begins to melt about 1100 degrees. Just gentle heat if you go this route. Just trying to promote some movement of the different materials to break it loose. I would try the home made penitrating fluid first.

Bill
Yes i received your check. I will be sending you $5 back. I also received a check from Vern. Thanks very much.

I remember when I removed the gauled stainless steel bolts from the boom I drilled them out slowly then redrilled and tapped for a slightly larger bolt. Then used plenty of Penetrox on the new bolts.

Jim

Thanks all for your suggestions! I was able to get the end plate off.

Mitchell, I really appreciate the diy penetrating oil recipe. I tried it and with some heat from my heat gun I was able to coax the screws out and pull the end plate out of the boom. The threads didn't look good so I re-tapped for a larger screw. I am glad to be done with that job.

Bill, the sheaves are perfect! I installed them and put new reefing lines in and they work like a charm, thanks again! Let me know how you want me to send you payment. It looks like others have sent you checks, is your address the same as the return address that is on the sheaves you sent me? If so I will send you a check to that address. If you have paypal, or any other online payment method I can do that too, whatever works for you.

Shane

Jim, please let me know if you're still making sheaves. I'm finally at the point of rebuilding my boom and all of the sheaves are pretty well shot...

Tony

I am making a set for Tony this week. I can make you a set also. Give me an address to send them to.

I didn't realize that you are Rewired. Anyway, I made the sheaves this morning and I'll get them in the mail soon. Send me what ever the postage is that it cost to get them to you. I'm jealous you are sailing in the VI.

Thanks, Jim!

I wish we were sailing this year, but with so many projects, it would cost the same thing to go back in and come out for hurricane season in a couple of months... It's almost $700 to put back in, $700 for a spot on the limited hurricane haul out list and $750 to come out again. That pretty well covers my fees for being in the hard until then, and lets me take more time to try to 'do it right the first time' on my projects.

I probably haven't taken enough pictures, but I'm hoping to do posts on steering refit (including full pedestal rebuild), hatch lens replacement, etc. when things settle down a bit.

Thanks and regards!

I just finished a rebuild of Dana's steering gear. At the end of last season one of the conduits that houses one of the cables from the pedestal to the quadrant froze up. Our system was the original Orion system. I went to Edson to get replacement parts because Orion is no longer around. They provided new conduits and cables but the changeover from old to new was not so easy. I never found another company that had what I needed. Dealing with Edson was OK but you need to know exactly you want and be direct with their salesmen. Let me know if I can be of any help to you with this project.

Do you have the Edson or the Orion steering? I am thoroughly familiar with the Edson, have replaced everything on it, upgraded a few bits, and changed from SS cable to dyneema.

Warren,

Ours is the Edson. I don't want to hijack this great thread, but I'll start a new one. By the way, thanks for all of your help in earlier posts about the steering!

If anyone needs a set of boom end sheaves, let me know, I made some extra.

Jim Cleary
Hello Jim,
I definitely could use a set of boom end sheaves if you still have extras. I had one split in half while putting a reef in the main, binding the reef line. I’m sure the other one is ready to split as well. I can PayPal, Venmo, or snail-mail you a check - your call. If available, please mail to 3827 Oak Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19136.

Thanks!

The sheaves are in the mail. I have two more sets available.

Jim
Hey Jim,

I'll take a set if they are still available!
