Bedlog Repair Morning Star

We removed the original Perkins Diesel which was leaking oil badly from the rear seal and the oil pan. It had been mounted to the bedlogs with angled steel plated which were through-bolted. The superficial bolt holes were repaired with graving pieces and the deeper ones with dowels, both with epoxy. Interestingly the starboard bedlog had been altered aft with narrowing of the bedlog. This defect was also repaired. While the engine compartment was empty, we degreased and painted it and painted the waterlift muffler (cosmetics). The copper foil strips are grounding for our single side band radio. Bolts pictured are connecting them to exterior grounding plates.

Nice job. What are you replacing the Perkins with? It is more engine than the boat needs. Brewer spec'd a 30 hp Yanmar. I replaced my Perkins with a Beta 35hp. Gets me very close to hull speed at top rpm, which what on wants. I run at about 2100 rpm for cruising and rev to 2650 for 15 minutes every 4 hours. Keeps diesels happy to under big loads occasionally. Here's a question: why have the British never made light bulbs? Answer: they could not figure out how to make them leak oil.

LOL! I replaced the Perkins with a Beta 38. I haven't launched yet so am looking forward to seeing how she goes and hoping that they got the transmission ratio close enough so I don't have to re-pitch or replace my prop. It is rather new and that would be a big ouch. I went with Beta because of their custom "feet" installation process which worked well. It fit the existing bedlogs like a glove, with alignment and position spot on.
