Hello Everyone,
I'm planning to sail South to San Diego mid October to join the rally in November. Sonata is now nearly ready. I'm not sure I am but, will be.
Are any other Morgans planning on this too? Or any interested crew? Right now it's just two of us on Sonata.

I was very close to going this year. I had pretty much determined I was going, mostly because I hated my job. Now that I am gainfully employed at a job that is quickly paying down debt and allowing me to save more money, I am putting it off until more debt is paid off.

Warren, seems like a wise decision to me. I've been trying to get ready and do this for several years now. Now feels right at least. If the stars align. But I'm planning on it.

I might go, but no one wants to sell me insurance. Boat is too old or is not worth enough. What are you doing for insurance?

That's something I still need to address Terry. Sonata is only insured for San Francisco Bay at this time.
How did you deal with this on your Pacific cruise?

I have a plan from progressive for California. Only because marinas require it. When you are jn Mexico, you must have insurance from a Mexican carrier, and i used novamar. It was very cheap and they don't care about age of the boat because let's face it, it's Mexico and they won't likely pay out anyway. Otherwise, i don't bother. I will skip a rant on my personal feelings about the industry.

Warren, we probably feel about the same regards to the industry. I have checked into Mexican insurance already, it's indeed reasonable. I need to contact my agent covering us here. Next week I guess. When I bought Sonata, they would only cover for the bay. I can't recall if it extends outward.
Anyway, I hope we can get coverage.

On the Pacific cruise in 2-16-2017, I got a reasonable Jackline policy froma broker back East. I was all set to do the same and then this spring they discontinued the Jackline policy. I don't know who the underwriter was. I have BoatUS/Geico, grandfathered in after26 years, which covers US and Canada., They insure in Mexico, but only for boats younger than 30 years. (Right you can sail a Beneteau, whose keels occasionally fall off, but not a Morgan 382, at least one of which we know has circumnavigated. All BS in my view.

Terry,
As I understand it then, you could sail the HaHa. You would need Mexican insurance which seems quite easy to aquire. It sounds as if you're covered to the border with your present insurance. But then I could be wrong too.

Mitchell - That's excellent you are going! We were hoping to take Zia on the Ha Ha this year. Maybe next year.

Re: insurance - we've had BoatUS for 12+ years, and they just sent us a letter saying we need to haul out and have a surveyor do a valuation survey, or we will be cancelled. We've had zero claims on the policy. I've gotta say, it's understandable since we've all seen what kind of condition some 30-40 year old boats can be in ;-).

We have sunk (pun) an irrational amount of $$ into upgrades on Zia, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the surveyor says. We'll be doing that in Sept when we need our bottom painted anyway.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy Independence Day all!
I'm still not sure how the insurance deal will play out. Hopefully my agent and Safeco who carries the policy will insure for this. Like you, and probably most folks here, I've put a bundle into Sonata. And she was really outfitted well and not much of a project when we purchased her. She is set up for blue water and has a fair amount of experience there.
We'll see how this goes.

Hey Mitchell,

I might be interested in crew, if you are able to get all the insurance stuff sorted out. I need to run it down with my partner before I commit, but wanted to at least let you know of the interest. I am on vacation on Maine right now, but we can talk more later to see if it is a good fit :)
