Anyone with spare Nicro-Fico traveller end blocks?

schlepper

John m. Harrison
my Previous owners had pretty much jury rigged the blocks on each end of the traveller and after much deliberation, have decided to stick with the Nicro-Fico track and just get the right hardware for the ends that I'm missing.... well, at least that's what I was planning to do. Seems RigRite.com is the only place that shows them in their online catalogue that I can find. I called to see about price and ordering, they don't have them in stock and the company they had that was manufacturing them went out of business!

I have called Guido at Garhauer and he's going to see if they have anything to fit my 1 7/16" Nicro-Fico track.

I know many on this board have replaced their track, etc. so I will ask does anyone have the Nicro-Fico track end blocks they would sell? I'll try to post a picture of them but they are double sheave fixed on the slide with cam cleat leading aft. I found one at a surplus store that works great and need one more but would buy a pair for an exact match?

Nicro-Fico traveller end blocks

I am sort of in the same situation as you. I have the traveller, but no end blocks. Let us know what Garhauer says, please. I have meant to talk to them, but have not gotten around to it. Or, if you find another alternative, let us know. I wish I could help, but if you solve your issue, I would love to take advantage of what you learn.

I got a brand new traveler, 4:1 purchase, and swapped out the old Nicro-Fico traveller. Guido made a perfect fit for me, based on my very careful measurements. Installing took less than 1 hour - mainly because the headliner in the nav berth was already removed.
Sailing with the new traveller is so much better than the old traveller (chiefly b/c it was so old, and was fully manual - just had manually moved pegs)

I have the same issues with my old Nicro-Fico too. Refurbishing the car with new rollers would probably work OK, but need to make new parts. The roller axle removal might not work too well, since they are essentially rivets. Looks like the car might get damaged during the process. Matt, did you replace yours with the Garhauer recently, and if so, how did Guido treat you on the price?

Matt, did you make the new traveller track longer than the old one? Did Garhauer make a new track with holes in the same place as the old? Which of the Garhauer travellers did you use--the "all enclosed" or the standard open block model?

thanks.

I talked to Guido and he is checking their stock to see if they have the sliders that will fit the Nicro Fico track and if they don't have it made up with the double sheave end block, he said they'll make it. I ordered a pair with he cam cleats built in. He said it'll take about a week. I'll post back when I get them and how they work.

As for the car, I think mine is reasonably okay. In looking at other older boats, the 4 wheel car on my boat is seemingly everywhere, hard to believe they are so hard to find replacements for given their prevalence.

I have one track end with double sheaves and cam cleat that I bought at a surplus store a couple of weeks ago. It is hard to express the joy I felt when using it this past weekend under sail... so now I will get a matching pair from Guido and all will be right with that part of my world. lol!

John, could one just mount the blocks off the track at each end. I guess I had not previously thought about that option. Please let us know if Garhauer has sliders that fit the nicro track. that would save me lots of money.

Also, I like the bimini you have, but how do you use your after winches. I am struggling with how to install a strong bimini support system and not make it impossible to swing a winch handle for my aft secondary winches.

Guys: a number of years ago I bought a Schaefer block system that works on the Nicro Fico system. There is a double block on each end with a rope clutch held in by a screw, then lines to the centerpiece. I then installed two cleats on the cockpit face below the clutch so all is secure. If someone wants the numbers advise, I will go on the boat in this cold weather and check it out and advise.

Love to know about it Dick. NOt sure why you need a cleat if you have a clutch, but maybe I don't understand. But, would love to have the info you have when the weather allows. Don't freeze for our sake.

Terry:
I fished my pieces out. I had removed him from the boat for winter storage. My double block end pieces which by measurement are probably for 1/7/16 inch track include the jam cleat and the setscrew for securing it to the end of track. These are Schaefer number 404. I have contacted Schaefer and these are no longer available. Whatever centerpiece(traveler piece) I have has no numbers on it.

The cleats I mentioned are used for storing the traveler rope when not in use or after use. This is so it is not a mess in my cockpit. Models 38-2. Traveler located in front of pedestal

At the suggestion of Schaefer I contacted Rig Rite in Rhode Island for their suggestions.

I would suggest contacting Rig Rite at http://www.rigrite.com or 401-739-1140. Their website will give you guidance as to types of track and cars to fit. The girl there advised that the Schaefer traveler piece shown for 1/1/2 track would not ride on the Nicro fico track.

I believe my center traveler piece may have been made up using the original Nicro Fico piece, tapping holes in it and attaching the Schaefer blocks with beckets. If that is the case you should be able to duplicate it.

Rig Rite in answering the phone says they are also Kenyon who are the makers of our booms as you know. This may be of value to anyone looking for boom parts.

In searching for my old traveler stops supplied by Morgan, I couldn't find them, they may be on the boat somewhere. I did however find that I have used end boom pieces.(Not for sale).

Terry -

My traveller is in the cockpit, and yes, the replacement was longer than the original. But with the blocks at the end of the traveller, the "throw" of the traveller wasn't extended much. But... using the traveller is now a breeze!
Guido provided their MT-1 with holes drilled exactly where my old holes were, allowing for a very simple and quick swap-out. I think I paid about $400, not including line or installation.

All,
I talked to Guido Friday afternoon and he said they had shipped the end blocks for my Nicro-Fico... and should receive by Monday/tomorrow. Assuming I receive them, I will photograph them and post them up.

As promised by Guido at Garhauer, I received my 2 End Blocks for the Nicro-Fico Traveller today. Here is the image of them right out of the cardboard shipping box. These things are going to make a great difference from the jury rig I've been sailing with the past 2 years!

Thanks Guido and Garhauer!

On my 384 i have the same blocks and each end has the cam cleat. Well with my dodger those cam leats would not release fast enough for me. To much range of motion was needed to get this job done.
So I removed both sets of cams. On the cabin edge i installed a new set of cam cleats with a guard so the line would stay put. Works faster for me to adjust the traveler.

Lee, do you have a picture of that rig? Also, please post up a picture of your boat... I looked at it before I bought the boat I have now and it was a tough decision... yours being the 384 had a lot more stuff on it and would be a great boat...

Thanks and please post up some pics!!

John

PS: Would like to see your boat sometime, I'm in Clwtr Downtown, where is yours? Still in Tarpon?

John , You sure can see my boat yes i'm in Tarpon on the anclote river.

Lee,
That would be great. I have probably 100 pictures of the bowels of your boat when I looked at it... so if you need some before and after shots, I can help with the before. I have started a powerpoint of the changes, upgrades, clean ups and other mods done on mine so far just to give me encouragement if I ever grow weary!!

email address is jmharrison123@yahoo.com

Thanks and we'll have to hook up and compare notes.

Hi Lee, we are looking for alternative routing options for the traveler lines on our 384. Can you share photos of your setup?
