Annapolis Breakfast

This past Saturday morning, at Grumps Cafe in Annapolis MD, was the place to be for Morgan 38 owners. On hand was Keefer & Liza Douglas and Family from "Ripple", Jay Green & Elaine from "Njord", Mark & Lucille Kubinyak from "Wayward Wind" ( a Catalina 42), and Bonnie & Jim Cleary from "Dana". We all were either coming from or going to the Annapolis Sailboat Show. The Douglases will be joining the Salty Dawg rally from Norfolk to The Bahamas, The Greens have recently completed a new Beta engine install, Mark & Lucille are in the process of replacing the electronics on board their Catalina, Bonnie and I were there for the pancakes. The food was great, the conversation was wonderful and the friendship was extraordinary.

Holy cow! I'm in Annapolis and was at the boat show on Thursday & Saturday. My Dad & step mom live right by Grumps and they go there often. Somehow I missed the memo. I'm really bummed! I was considering doing a post asking if anyone was going to the Annapolis sailboat show. I've been busy though, and maybe someone posted it and I missed it. Next year we'll need to coordinate a little (even us people from the Left Coast). ;)

Can anyone post any pictures of y'all meeting?

I was busy "accessorizing" for Zia. One of my focuses was composting toilets. I got to play around and hands-on investigate Nature's Head and Air Head. And my usual (going on for 6 years) comparison of Hydrovane and Monitor wind vane steering. And lots of other things. I ended up plunking down some coin for a Nature's Head and a Hydrovane. Surely the insanity will end soon and I will stop accessorizing for Zia?

When I was going to the Boat Show on Thursday, my wife Susan drove up to Hancock, MD, to see her folks. She had only been there interacting with them for about 4 hours when they got test results that they have COVID. So she was exposed, and now is on a (sort of) quarantine for 3-5 days and will then get tested (2 different tests) before we fly home. They are double vaccinated and thankfully don't have any symptoms. Her dad is 88 so it's a little worrisome.

I hope you guys enjoyed the show? I did, but it was a little freaky being around that many people. I was one of the 3% of people who were masked. In Oregon, almost everyone is still wearing masks in those kind of situtations.

Cheers!
-Mark

PS: I'm moving this to the main forum, since most people don't look in the 'Pub'. In fact I think I'm going to combine those two groups because people missing things like Warren's post about Ted Brewer passing, etc.

I am so sorry that I didn't post earlier that we were going to meet in Annapolis. We all would have loved to have met you and Susan. Next year I will be more diligent, promise. We didn't spend a lot of money at the show but came away with a bunch of answers to questions concerning our winter projects. Is the Hydrovane the unit that can be mounted off center so you can keep the stern ladder? How tall are you and Susan? years ago we looked at the composting heads but Bonnie is only 5'1" and the units are so tall that her feet would dangle when she sat on it. That put the kabash on that idea. You will be pleased to know that I did showcase the blue Morgan 38 sweatshirt at breakfast.

Jim— I hope your pancakes were good? You & Bonnie seem to have had to most realistic goal of everyone.

My stepmom just reminded me how Grump's got its name: The founder used to work at Friendly's (east coast chain), and was a contrarian.

Yeah, I'm 6 ft & Susan is 5'-7", but I'm planning on putting a little folding step in the side of the vanity so that Susan & others can rest their feet on it when on the throne. We have been on some amazing sailboats and Susan always is bothered by the whiffs of sewage that periodically drift by. In most cases, from the holding tank vents, I think. The composting toilets are pretty darned compelling especially considering the simplicity and lack of odor. I have yet to meet someone who had one that didn't rant about how great they are.

Yes, Hydrovanes can be offset, so the gate/ladder can stay where it is. They also don't use the ship's steering system which helps prevent wear & tear, and they serve as an emergency rudder in case our beefy rudder gets nailed by something.

I'm glad to hear you paraded the M38 sweatshirt. I'm embarrassed to say I forgot mine - our departure from Oregon was a little rough. It would have been really hilarious if I saw you walking thru the crowd with that on.

Cheers,
-Mark

Again I'm sorry for not mentioning about being in Annapolis. The enthusiasm for the Morgan 38s is doing quite well and much of that is due to your handling of the Morgan Board. Thanks for the effort! Bonnie and I have pretty much given up our long distance ocean cruising, so my desire for a vane steerer is gone, but I envy your mounting one on the boat. As for the occasional wiff of head venting, looks like we will live with that as Bonnie likes to keep her feet on the ground (deck). Have a safe trip back home.

Just to add that it was great seeing Jim and Bonnie again, and meeting the Greens and Kubinyaks. Sorry we missed you Mark, would have been great to meet up! I too brought my sweatshirt that day, but it was mostly too warm to need it.

We thankfully had only small stuff left on the pre-departure purchase list, but one of the advantages of being local is that we can always go talk to our rigger and engine guy at the show. We were down to the wire on projects with both of those, plus new canvas and emergency tiller reconstruction. But everything is done now. I will post another thread with Ripple's info for the Salty Dawg rally and our winter cruising if anyone is interested in following along.

I am sure I will have some questions for the forum as usual when we start breaking stuff in exotic locations (the more remote, the more unusual and hard to find the part will be, right?).

Also on the Morgan meetup front I will try to see Warren while we are down in Hampton, VA later this week for the rally kickoff.

Be safe and enjoy the journey. Keep us up to date on your progress. Ripple is certainly strong enough to carry you to your destination.

Hey--please add me to the list of "the disappointed " and unanointed! I too missed the get together. I have been operating tours on "Non Sea Quitter" out of Port Annapolis for two seasons and other places in Edgewater and Galesville for six years.! So my boat is about a mile from Grumps and I go there a handful of times a year. That was a lovely day and I had a great sail with a family of four that Saturday. Please don't forget to use the forum to stay in touch. There are probably a dozen or more 38's close to Annapolis--I keep meeting fellow owners. Anyone else want to meet--exchange stories or visit? I'm sailing for fun Nov 15-19 and then hauling out in Edgewater--first time in two years.

Stay cool and have fun!

OK,OK, I screwed up. I never thought there would be anyone else interested in meeting up. I stand corrected! How about next year at the time of the Annapolis show we plan on having a preplanned, preannounced, prescheduled meeting of any and all Morgan 38 owners who care to attend. I will do whatever legwork is necessary if Mark will do the advertising. Maybe something like an extended lunch or dinner. Let me know if you would be interested. I'll start making a list and checking it twice.

Next summer when we know that the world has returned to level, solid ground, I will get the dates for the Annapolis Sailboat show and find someplace where we can have a lunch or a brunch. We can then put the word out and see who might be interested. If anyone is interested now, let me know and I will start making a list. I love making lists!!!.

I am happy that your Salty Dawg was successful. Sorry to hear that the Abacos are still reeling from the storm.
