Air Conditioning

lberndt

Larry K. Berndt
We plan to install air conditioning on our 382 next spring and are looking for input. Is 12,000 BTU about the right size? Where have the compressors been installed? How about duct work? Any and all comments are welcome.
Larry

Jose; Thanks for the response. Where is your air conditioner mounted? What kind of duct work did you run?
Thanks Larry

My AC unit (16,000 BTU) is placed where the v-berth insert use to be. I had the v-berth refaced and made solid across the front. The unit is on a raised platform off the floor and is plumed from a thru-hull in the head. The outflow is inside the hang locker. These were already available from a prior installation. The return air vent is just in the middle of the solid front and the unit is just behind that. As for venting ..I had wooden 3X8 plenum boxes made (one in each of the lockers on the starboard side)and there are two vents ... one back into the v-berth and one into the main salon. The one into the salon is larger. There is also a diverter built into the v-berth plenum box to divert a larger volume of air into the salon as necessary. The plenum boxes feed off a single run of 6" flex pipe that runs from the unit through both lockers bottoms on the starboard side. This was the least obtrusive installation I could figure.

I am planning on Air conditioning my boat this winter and would like to know where others have placed the condenser and ideas on running duck work.

Hey folks,
I am resurrecting an old thread to find out how others have installed air conditioning in their boats. I just purchased a MarinAire 16,000 btu reverse cycle unit and plan to Install it in the next month or so. Is your unit in one of the hanging lockers, under the galley sink, etc? I am considering the cutout in the v-berth like Seatreat did in a previous post on this thread. However, I certainly want to explore all options.
Thanks

Tom , My AC/HEAT is mounted in the seat locker on the other side of the sink . NOT under the sink. The thru hull is in the corner where the two cushions meet. And the water pump is mounted in the small shallow locker just forward of that .
So if you cut out the face side and expanded metal grill it you can still change filters with not a lot of work.
I did find that i had to put a outside screen on the outside hull cause of the seaweed started to clog the pick up pipe every 3 weeks
My hanging locker is full of foul weather jackets and pants. Wind breakers and the like. .
I can send ya pix if you like .. Lee

My AC is in the port seat opposite the sink right on the center line well close.! Than to a Plastic splitter like 5 or 6 inches to 4 inches the big one goes to the slatted cabin ate port side to the rear of the book shelf. and the 4 inch flex AC duct snakes thru the port seat to the head and up 2 feet to go thru the head cabinet than a teak long box was built to hide it over top of the shower faucets and on to the vee birth where a round adjustable vet is on the bulkhead.
Really I'm in florida , More AC than heat, so there is not that much loss in space and thru hull is at least accessible. The one large vent really does do the job. We sleep in the main salon.
At anchor i have the 5k generator to run things..

Where did you place your 5k generator?

I ended up putting mine in the large hanging locker across from the head. I hated to give up the storage but it was the easiest place to install it. I had to make a plenum box to distribute the air with a single large vent in the salon and a small vent in the v-berth over the shelf. It works great even on a hot Louisiana summer day.

Thomas, I installed mine same place as you and i can still put hanging stuff in there, just not really long items. The unit does a great job cooling it off and the reverse cycle heat is nice in our mild winters here in Florida...
