Aft lazarette hatch

I was replacing the seal on the aft lazarette and realized what a lousy design it was. Have you all done many modifications to the aft lazarette hatch?

I converted the Lazerette space to house the propane bottles. I originally was going to hang them on the bulkhead but couldn't get in to seal the bulkhead to deck joint to my satisfaction. I built a box that drains thru the hull and seals at the top to the lid. I sealed the lid as well with West Systems epoxy and then coated with Cetol. The box is thin plywood sheathed in fiberglass. There is a top lip of only 'Glass that sits on the locker's flange. Clear as mud?

Hope this helps

I grew tired of coating the wood hatch and went to 3/4" Starboard as a replacement. Our lazzerette is also used to house our propane tanks. I sealed the upper bulkhead to the deck as best I could and added a second drain hole for when the lower drain hole is sealed when the stern squats. We also stow 6 large fenders in this locker.

I reduced but could not eliminate the leaks. I use aluminum propane tanks. Had the bulkhead tabbed to the deck by a professional. But there are gaps right next to the hull. Those are sealed with spray foam.

JIM: I need to add a new drain, as you did. I don't know how to drill right at the centerline, as you did. Advice? And how far off the top of the boot stripe is your vent?

Sorry not getting back to you sooner. If I remember correctly (which is something I do less often), I worked from the inside first. Looking where the plastic thru-hull would fit as close to the inside of the transom. Eyeing up the centerline of the hull, a 1/4" hole was drilled through at that point. The area around that hole was ground clean and filled with epoxy goop to have a flat area for the fittings nut. Then from the outside the correct size hole saw for the fitting was used to finish the hole. The last thing was to trim off the excess threads on the fitting alone the nut so that the hole would be as low as possible. While the boat is motoring and the stern is squatting, the hole remains clear of the water.

I thought I had a pic, but no. The lazarette drain I have is an aft facing copper tube elbow, 90 degree, about 1/2" diameter. Looks original but I really don't know. Seems to work well.
