Adding Dorades

barefoot

Scott J Brown
I would love to get better ventilation in my M-383 and have
thought about adding dorade-type vents something like the forward
ones on the M-384. Has anyone added dorade or cowl vents up
forward on an M-382 or M-383? Any suggestions for what vents to
get and how to do it? Thanks. Lenny

Lenny,
Why add more holes in your cabin roof? I've added very low draw Hella Turbo 2-speed fan throughout the boat, and they've performed great in Mexico in 100+ heat. I put 2 in the vee berth, 2 in the main salon, and one in the galley.

Jim makes a good point, although I have got the equipment to add big vetus dorades next to the after hatch. I like them because you can close them tight from inside using a mushroom vent. I have always been afraid that a big dorade box could get washed off the deck with big seas--although I will probably never encounter any such seas in the simple coastwise cruising I do. WE all dream of the long distance voyage. Anyway, I am going to put them aft by the main hatch because I did not want them up where sheeets would catch them. I have had to construct bases for them. I made these out of round pieces of 2" micarda (resin soaked linen), but any upgrade book will have a picture of the standard and traditional dorade box if you want to go htat route. For appearance, I assume you will want to have the vents themselves vertical, which means forming the bases to take into account the camber of the coach roof. One other thought: if this is for underway, yes you may want more vents. But if this is for anchor, construct a couple of wind scoops for the forward hatch and the coach roof hatch. I have used these in the Caribbean to good effect. I think West Marine sells such an item, too. Get the one up forward high, with a hailard, and you collect whatever little breeze comes by.

Lenny, I have, I believe, the last 384 built. It does not have the forward dorades like almost all other 384's. I plan on installing a pair very soon which will resemble the original factory dorades. I plan on incorporating a shallow deck box between the two dorade boxes for things like winch handles and sail ties.

Installed Nicro Fico round mushroom SS vents in 1978, one in the head and one opposite to it. These have worked fine over the years, can be opened or closed from below, and nothing can hang up on them. I might want something larger if I were in a very hot climate.
