A cautionary tale!!! To all the 3QM30F Yanmar owners:
By some miracle the shaft and seal were still available on the face of the earth; Aye there's the rub!
After being told, "We don't cotton to your kind" from KKMI and Bay Ship and Yacht who are both Yanmar dealers I contacted a well-regarded local machinist.
I could not risk shipping the pump anywhere as if it went AWOL, so would I be. No other viable solution short of repowering, and a 75-mile tow.
The machinist, following the workshop manuals instructions explicitly, using a 3-jaw puller one of the cast iron vanes broke. It required brazing and subsequent machining to the original contour. The failed bearing unit sounded as if all the valves in the cylinder head had gone loose and was well attached to the pump body after 46 years / 1500 hours. It required extraction pressure in excess of my pain threshold.........
Mission accomplished with the addition of just enough airline miles for my next trip to Hawaii, "Wanna get away? "
I can finally sleep!
