I am going today to crawl thru the 1978 382 in the water. Looking at the photos of the hauled boat I have a question about the prop shaft / rudder. Does one have to pull the rudder to pull the shaft or is it off set ? If the rudder has to be pulled how complicated is that?

To remove the shaft you either have to drop the rudder or pull the engine forward and out of the space. to drop the rudder the keel has to be 18" t0 24" off the ground while blocked up, or you need to dig a hole 18"to 24" in the ground for the rudder to drop into. Check with the yard to see if they will allow a hole to be dug. The prop is in an aperture and is not offset. The cutlass bearing can be removed with the prop off and the shaft still in. Once a hole is dug, it is fairly simple to lower the rudder using two 1/2 ton chain falls.
Dropping the rudder is not difficult. I've done it a couple times now, and it takes me about an hour, including disassembling the steering quadrant. It needs a bit of extra blocking, just let the yard know that when you haul.
It's an old boat. You really should drop the rudder to service anyway.
Well I had to pass on this one too many issues with the plumbing, old leaks and wiring. The old Yanmar has suffered from lack of use…starts right up but some serious thumping. If parts were more available it might be worth bringing her back but i am too old and fat for these tight spaces.
Sounds like (unfortunately) a wise decision.
Just a year ago I flew from California to Maine to look at an S&S Swan 43. Brand new Beta engine. But that's about all the maintenance the poor boat had seen in many years. Looked good on paper, but not.
I decided Sonata is pretty darned nice and big enough for now.
