Welcome to this website/forum for people interested in the Morgan 38 Sailboat. Many of our members are 'owners' of Morgan 38s, but you don't need to be an owner to Register/Join.
Dave, thanks for your input. Each makes sense in terms of the age of the boat and the perkins. We don’t run these engines long enough to help them either. Just to get us from the slip to the open water, and then shut them down. Never use a full tank of fuel, so who knows how old the ‘stuff’...
I like your first suggestion, which is, in reality, what I do. Wait for the wind to blow the smoke away from the other boats, let her run til it clears. The mechanics at haven Harbour have suggested an additive to the fuel which can lessen the smoking. Another suggestion was using a block...
please send along the photos of your work. Galileo is in rock hall at Haven Harbour. This year they are doing a variety of patchwork tasks to keep the Perkins 4108 alive and well.
The thing that drives me crazy is the amount of smoke at startup. I wait for the wind to blow in the right...
Where are you installing the unit? I am on the Chesapeake bay and want to put one in but am running out of places to install the unit. Any suggestions? already used the port settee for a new holding tank. Was considering the starboard side but would have to sacrifice the water tank to do that,
i need to lean on the collective wisdom of this group with a question: what needs to be shut off (shore power/ house power) when starting the diesel? the previous owner of galileo is no longer around but left specific instructions regarding start up: disconnect the shore power, shut off all...
also be thankful that you live in a place where your morgan stays in the water year round and you can sail in december instead of waiting for a launch date in april and anticipating the cold and dark of winter. i was at fort story last christmas and watched with envy as you bay area sailors...
'dense white smoke.' when i haven't run my perkins in a while, i get 'dense white smoke' til she warms up. enough so that i wait til the breeze is carrying it away from the dock so as not to annoy my dockmates. any thoughts?
old subject revisited: companionway doors. Jim, your post of december '10: do you have any more pictures of your doors? i want to replace the drop boards and need to know where to mount the hinges which dicates how to frame the doors? did you modify the drop board slots or can you still use...
you are looking at the right boat. i bought a 384 in august 2016 on the hard at solomons. currently we are across the bay in rock hall. the 'problems ' i had with the boat were all discussed on this site and honestly discussed by the members. but the boat has good bones and is worth the time...
i am one year into ownership of a 384. survey revealed moisture levels in the deck around the flanges. look for moisture penetrations around the portholes. members of this forum were good enough to point out another possible problem: the holding tank that morgan built into the keel was prone...
i was sailing off cape may last weekend, in my cape dory 27, which got me to wondering how the morgan would handle under similar conditions. how did the morgan sail under jib alone?
a collective 'thanks' for your advices. i know my own limitations, but not the boat. and i appreciate the well grounded common sense approach you have taken. i was looking for the approach to sail mix that you have used. i have the good fortune of purchasing a boat that was set up for safe...
i am new to sailing the morgan 38. i have cut my teeth with a 27' cape dory sailing off cape may. this weekend's weather was not for the faint of heart, but the cape dory handles the winds well with a reefed main alone and sometimes with some help from a self tending jib.
my question goes out...
they say 'imitation is the greatest for of flattery' nice job. i know what i will do on 'galileo.' thanks for posting the pictures. how does the latch on the top of each door function?
