    Water Pump Leak Advice

Marc Here’s a link to the previous discussion about replacing my wet-elbow ... http://www.morgan38.org/morgan38/index.php?threads/wet-elbow-clogged.15526/

    Water Pump Leak Advice

This is consistent with blockage further on in the circuit. Did you try the test I suggested above? If the pump cannot push water through the system, the pressure inside the pump will easily build up high enough to overpower the weakest seal. Since you just improved one seal, the shaft-seal...

    Water Pump Leak Advice

I should add that water can still be getting through, so just checking for water coming out the exhaust is not enough .... The pump can still be trying to push against too much resistance, even if the circuit is not completely blocked.... It should be easy to blow through the hose ... If not...

    Water Pump Leak Advice

Critical check! I just went through this, and it turned out that it wasn’t the raw-water pump at all ... The wet-elbow had corroded shut ... Which meant the pump was trying to do the impossible by pumping water against infinite resistance! Apparently this is pretty common ... So, check for...

    A Current's Affect on Drag

Mark ... What I want to know is what you are using to make those cool diagrams! C

    A Current's Affect on Drag

I’m going to agree and disagree with both of you... In the diagrams above: boat A will be going faster than boat B over the ground. But they will both be going the same speed relative to the water. On this basis alone, the drag would be the same for both boats. However, since wind speed is...

    Cabin heater

I have a pair of “Aladdin” mantle-style lamps, as shown here: These guys produce both light and a lot of heat, and are aesthetically very pleasing. They generate both radiant heat and hot air, which circulates in the cabin. The one pictured is locked into a mounting ring attached to the...

    Vented Loop on 3QM30 exhaust?

Yes! I had exactly that problem, and a vented loop on that hose fixed it. Note: The vented loop has to be run *above* the waterline. C

    Vented Loop on 3QM30 exhaust?

Here’s an illustration that may help: (Pump to the right, bowel to the left) (Source: BoatUS)

    Vented Loop on 3QM30 exhaust?

For the head, the vented loop goes on the hose between the pump and the bowl, not on the hose between the intake and the pump. In that position it works as intended and is essential. C

    Vented Loop on 3QM30 exhaust?

I agree with Jim. The conditions for back-siphoning cannot occur in this circuit, so there is no need for a vented loop. Chris

    Going up the mast

Jim Wow! Thanks! A great help, as always .... You know, I’ve received a lot of good advice over the years from a lot of good, experienced people on this forum But I’m going to start start calling you “Yoda” .... C

    Going up the mast

Jim I like the idea of mast steps in combination with an ascender. But, as you say, the good-old kind are no longer available. Perhaps one could DIY and fabricate them out of flat aluminum bar stock? I can imagine making a jig for bending flat-strap aluminum .... but I don’t know anything...

    Going up the mast

i recently tried an ATN “Mast Climber” but returned it because it did not feel safe *at all* and was pretty pricey at ~ $500. But I have been looking into other methods for solo mast-ascension, and have stumbled across some pretty neat systems for “single rope” climbing on web-sites devoted to...

    Autopilot

Thanks to everybody for the feedback ... I’ve decided to back off a bit on upgrades until I have thoroughly restored Stargazer to proper shape as she is. As some of you may remember, I had to deal with a fairly horrific situation where a relative died in a house I owned in New Mexico. I ended...

    Autopilot

I am upgrading Stargazer’s navigation electronics: new radar, wind/speed/depth instruments, and autopilot. On the autopilot ... When I bought Stargazer ~8 years ago, she had a Raymarine ST-4000 Wheel Pilot system. This has worked fine for me through the years, though it has occasionally been...

    Wet elbow clogged

I am also going to replace the exhaust hose. Any recommendations? The current hose is wire-reinforced, and pretty munged at the ends.. C
