Further adventures of the good ship Ripple

Keefer, you are correct in describing Dorian as the worst ever seen in the Bahamas. We were in The Abacos the first winter after Dorian and the destruction everywhere was simply unbelievable. All Cays were devastated, none more so than Marsh Harbour, which looked quite literally like...

Could be for attaching a block for a spinnaker pole uphaul.

    Lazzaret

Yes the fiberglass lid is hinged on the starboard side end, lid now opens sideways, not aft like the original lid. I had some years back made new tops for the dorade boxes that do not open. I used on of the piano hinges from the old dorade tops. The lid opens past vertical so lots of room to...

Sorry, I thought the original was from Warren rather than Vern

    Lazzaret

Warren, I finally bit the bullet with regard to the lid on the stern lazzarette. I made a lip made of 3/8" aluminum angle welded on the corners which was bolted on, in sealant, around the opening, with tiny bolts. I made a mold and fabricated a new fiberglass lid which fit over and to the...

    Anchor Sizing

Brian, I think you've opened a can of worms regarding anchor preferences. Here's my 2 cents worth. First you are correct in that a fully loaded Morgan 38 will easily top 20,000 lbs. I have been cruising The Bahamas for 12 seasons with a bit of time pre and post Bahamas spent in southern...

    chain plate bolts

There is a product called Debond Marine Formula, made in or around Fort Pierce, Florida which does a great job of breaking down 5200. I have used it on a couple of deck fittings with great success. Does not damage gelcoat.

    Leaking rudder post.

The packing on my 384 is definitely 1/2". I've changed it 2 or 3 times. Like others have said be sure to clean the threads. The nut will take 3 rings, staggering the joints. I've always been able to get the threads started with the 3 rings in place but if you cannot get the threads started -...

    Rudder post leaking question

I have used a product called DeBond to remove fittings bedded in 5200 with great success. You can buy it at west marine and other marine supply stores. It's made in Fort Pierce, Florida where I store my 384 - someone in the boat yard turned me on to it.

    Calling Jim Cleary

On my 384 NEESA, I also have a small amount of rust that appears around the gudgeon upon annual haul out/summer storage in Florida. About 6 years ago I decided to have a look, so I dropped the ruddder. I drilled out two, 4" sections with a hole saw right along the intersection of the shaft and...

    Main salon Hatch

James & Terence, thanks for your response. I'll be installing 2 Lewmar medium profile hatches in the near future. I have read on the installation instructions to thru-bolt at the hinges and will do so.

    Main salon Hatch

Can anyone who has replaced their deck hatches with Lewmars tell me if the deck area the hatches are screwed to is cored or solid glass.

Best method for bedding Morgan chainplates???

Right ,cracks were visible without dye. not sure I can get a picture uploaded as internet spotty here in boatyard and I'm a little techno-challenged. I re-bedded the bolts top and bottom with butyl and the balance of the plate with life caulk ( polysulphide).

Best method for bedding Morgan chainplates???

Hey folks, thought I better post this in case other 38s are in a similar, but unknown state. I recently undertook to replace the chainplate bolts (that go through the deck) and rebed the plates, as part of preventative maintenance on my 384. I was happy to see no corrosion on the bolts, but...

    Water Tank O-Rings

I also did the cut-out of the stbd. tank 3 years ago. I cut as close as you can to the outside edges as possible with a skil saw and in one location with the multi-tool (vibrating blade). Once the top is off, the tank lifts right out of the fiberglass tub it sits in. I kind of wondered why...

    Gaskets for large opening ports

Has anyone sourced good gasket material for the large opening ports as found on the 384's. Mine coud use replacement as there is a bit of a drip in heavy rain. Pretty sure they are Bomars, but Pompanette who now handles Bomar ports is pretty much useless.
