I went with the Yanmar 4JH5E with a Hurth-style transmission. The engine itself was about 15K, and the extra work (enlarging exhaust port, swapping out all 1" hoses for 1-1/4" hoses, replacing fuel line, adding sound insulation) added another $5K. A fortune, but now I can use the...

What is the "ask"? Should I wait until the site and info is on a new platform?
I agree with everyone on the value of the site, but will point out that my personal use of the site was enormous when I first bought Shepherd's Star in '07. I learned a great deal about everything...
The plywood was part of the original boat. Everyone has it. Though I am 5'11" and 180 pounds, I can fit myself into the aft lazarette, and have done so to paint it, and to repair the bilge pump throughhull. It's not easy, but it can be done. Note that the aft-most lazarette is wet storage -...
There is an excellent article in "The Marlinspike Sailor" on how to fabricate a mast boot out of canvas, rubber, or sheet metal. It's not quite as simple as a big letter C.
The book is long out of print, but I'm lucky to have a copy.

This is a manual for a Morgan 41, circa 1978/1979. I have found it is almost identical in many respects to my 38-2, except for length (duh!), sail plan, and plumbing (the 41's had a second head). But note that when I got my 38-2, it was from the original owner, and he had made...

My traveller is in the cockpit, and yes, the replacement was longer than the original. But with the blocks at the end of the traveller, the "throw" of the traveller wasn't extended much. But... using the traveller is now a breeze!
Guido provided their MT-1 with holes drilled exactly...
I got a brand new traveler, 4:1 purchase, and swapped out the old Nicro-Fico traveller. Guido made a perfect fit for me, based on my very careful measurements. Installing took less than 1 hour - mainly because the headliner in the nav berth was already removed.
Sailing with the new traveller...
I just went with what i remembered Edson suggested. Attached is their "Comprehensive Guide", which proves my memory is going. You might find helpful.
They specified Teflon Grease for the wheel shaft bearings - and 30 wieght motor oil for the sheave pins...
And read the manual - you don't want the cables super-tight, as it will put undue strain on the pedestal gear. Just taut enough so there's no play in the wheel. Essentially, take up all the slack, but don't put a load on the cable.
I may be mistaken, but if you DON'T cross the cables underneath, they won't fit through the holes in the bulkhead underneath the helm station. Mine is made out of plywood, and the cables fit with very little extra space. If I were to try to put the cables on backwards, wouldn't they rub up...

Looks like you have a Simpson Laurence Sea Tiger 555 manual winch, is that correct? I have one as well, that I've not yet installed. Does it work well for you, and did you need to modify the locker doors to have it fit?
I am concerned that the angle of the chain, coming from...
I suspect the dock wiring, or one of your neighbors. It's very easy to test both the shore power for correct polarity using a $5 tester you can get at Home Depot. Insert it in a three-prong outlet, and the two lights should be green. If they're yellow or red, the wiring for the shore power is...

Thankfully, I've never had a problem with zincs, but I was told by a very knowledgeable mechanic what can cause problems. the first three are mistakes the owner can modify, and the last two might be the owner's mistake (or the marina's, or a neighbor's).
1) painting the shaft...

I have a M38-2, built in 1978. My stove is pressurized alcohol, so the aft-most locker is used for fender and line storage.
Some have it as a propane storage area, some do not.

The re-alignment must be done locally, and does not require opening up the tranny box. It is for aligning the transmission box to the propeller shaft. If you took a perfectly good transmission off the propeller and off the engine, then put it back on, you need to re-align the...
This isn't a simple swap-out either. You'll need to re-align the tranny to the prop-shaft, or better yet, get a mechanic to do it. Otherwise, you'll be replacing your cutless bearing (and probably your shaft as well) next winter.
Sorry, it was a six inch long piece of a 1 inch hose... it fit snugly, which certainly reduced, but did not eliminate, the inflow of water. When underway, the squatting boat means the water rises in the hose above the end of it. A longer hose (18") will solve the problem.
The hose can be...

I was the one that added a six-inch hose into the hole. Several people asked me why I have a hose on the back of the boat going into the water. I tell them it's a man-boat!
The new (more powerful) engine has a lot less soot than my old Perkins. Additionally, the mechanic put a...
