Carlo, I'm a negative guy:
The 12v wire circuit negative grounding point is a busbar in the engine compartment. Access through the quarter berth access hatch. It is subject to possible splashing from the prop shaft. Over the years, much new work gets grounded there. A small gauge wire goes from...
Mitchell, there is a Hurth/ZF manual on this site. If you read through it, I believe it says the transmission can be shifted from forward to reverse while under power. (Emergency situations sometimes require a quick retreat). A strong detent between FNR would hamper that action. It's possible I...
For those interested, (from an online source: http//sailboatrigdimensions.com/: )

Good luck with channel locks to loosen the packing nut. It took me a chain wrench, 4' of extentions, 1/2" breaker bar, 4' pipe and a propane torch.
Get the quadrant out of the way would be my advice, but I had a lot more going on. If that gland nut is loose, count your blessings. It won't leak...
Best I could do was deliver it here
Maurice, when Morgan changed from the 382 to the 383/84 they did a lot of copy & paste of the owner's manual.
Make sure that you check that the dimensions. Ensure that it is not an erroneous copy of the 382 dimensions.
Mauri Pro Sailing (St Pete,FL) had an...
Maurice, what you are looking for may be on this site. Go out to forums main page. Scroll down to "background" and click.
You see where our webmaster friend Mark Pearson posted a 383 owners manual. Go to page 98 and it has mast dimensions on it.
I tried copying the page but it wouldn't paste...
Jim, the folks at TransAtlantic Diesel (the Perkins experts) told me something along the lines of that damper plates were consumables. One should replace them every so often. Every couple 1000 hrs or so, I forget exactly what they said. You got your money's worth out of the first one.
The...
Sorry to hear the news. Ted designed some great boats. My interest in Ted's designs started when I got on a Whitby 42. I looked at Pan Oceanics(?) but they were Taiwan built and had WAY too much teak! The M383 turned out to be my sweetspot.
God speed Mr. Brewer.
Jim, I just checked in on the M38 site to see how everyone is doing. I saw your post. A couple thoughts:
Ticking is can be the start of a bearing failure. The cage holding the balls or rollers comes apart and starts hitting things. Once the cage/retainer falls apart, all the balls get loose and...
Terry, I had 2 old school Racor 500's in line. I picked one up cheap on Ebay, rebuilt it and replaced the under sink water separator. Its usual practice to have a water drain on a diesel filter. I ran a 10 mic under the sink, 2 mic Racor in the engine compartment, then the Perkins 10 micron on...
Terry, I had Perko strainer. I made my own top and bottom cork gaskets because I didn't want to spend $30 for Perko's versions. Turns out Perko's were thicker and I couldn't hold a vacuum at the strainer with the thinner gaskets. Water flow would come and go. I burned up a $30 impeller. Sounds...
My boat seemed more "weatherly" on one tack than the other, IIRC it was starboard.
Don't you want to minimize mast rake, (if not lean the mast forward to minimize weather helm? But a smaller jib might be the answer to overpowered and balance better.
I believe the ZF Hurth manual says the shaft...
I thought a solent stay would be my solution to being over powered. My 130 didn't roll up well to 100 or 90%. Snap the lever, hank on something strong and small, 2 reefs in the main, and let it blow. Move it out of the way when its done howling. Changing out a headsail on the furler's foil...
Apples & rock crushers, but my Perkins ran & started noticeably better and smoother after I adjusted the valve clearances. An injector rebuild stopped most of the start up smoking. Then as Jim said: clean fuel, air and oil in the crankcase is all diesel wants.
Oh yeah, an impeller with blades...
Steve, search for a picture from moderator Mark Pearson to see what he found in his tank. Many diesel boats get in rough seas, bounce around enough to dislodge that tar & dead microbes and clog the filter. Just what you need in an inlet or the "old lee shore". A dead engine!
So clean fuel can be...
Steven, my boat did that too. I fixed it by the following:
Pull your injectors out and have them rebuilt.
Adjust your valves to spec.
Have an additional fuel filter prior to engine. Racor 500 is ideal w/10 micron filter.
Have your fuel tank cleaned out / fuel polishing. Old boats have crap in...
The fiberglass build up is a production boat short cut. No backing plate or through bolts needed.
To address this correctly you need to go with Ken's solution. There should be an inside backing plate installed after the mound is ground flat with the hull. Fiberglass flat sheets can be hole saw...
I sailed my Morgan 383 on Lake Ontario for 10 years. Great boat for a great lake. It can handle almost anything the lake can dish out. Almost being the operative word. There are just some days to stay in port. The boat can handle more than you can. Most Morgans you'll find on the coast or...
Adam, I'd suggest that in the Baton Rouge area there are more than a few riggers. Get one to come over, check the fittings and measure what you have. Then the responsibility for fit is on him. Everything has to be compatible with your furler as well. Your boat must have received a new mast (and...
Glassed in tubes for limber holes that lead to the bilge on my 383, Jim. The tubes didn't go below the bottom of the mast area so it held a cup of water. Smallish drain hole in the mast and the aluminum step that it sits on. It would clog up with any dirt & debris (bugs, etc). So it would retain...
