Lettering on Transom (Morgan 384)

Dumb question- I am having my "new" Morgan 384 re-painted. Any thoughts on the size of letters on the transom? The boat is named Arabela. The yard forgot to measure the old letters before removing/prepping the boat for paint. I was thinking 5 inches?

The US Coast Guard specifies that the boat name must not be less than 4", so 5" would be fine for that.
I ordered vinyl lettering online and was able to adjust the size and see the width of the final lettering as well as the height. You should pay attention to that, so that it fills the space nicely. If I recall, I did 4 or 5 inches on the bow, and larger on the stern.

If your boat is coast guard documented you also have to have the home port on the transom. I also did vinyl lettering and changed colors when we repainted the boot stripe. I am interested in how you went about repainting the boat as the wife wants a blue one. Right now she has to settle for the blue boot stripe.

I just measured the "S" letter on Sonata, including the shadowing is about 7". "Sausalito" is about 4". This is while leaning over the stern pulpit.
You can get some perspective by looking at my avitar here.

My boat got damaged last year (Hull got dinged up) so I had a yard handle the paint job from start to finish because it was an insurance situation. Was approx. 15k. But if you do all your own prep work, I am guessing it would be much less expensive. Awlgrip is expensive but the labor is in the prep work.
