383 prop walk

When going astern she will not go starboard astern she walks port,is there anything I can do to improve going starboard, or is this a normal thing for 383? Thanks, charlie

Yes it’s normal. Try putting it in reverse and give it a burst of the throttle then put it in neutral.

I second what Thomas said. If the wind isn’t favorable for it, you won’t be able to back to starboard unless you do what he said.

My boat would back consistently to the right, except when it decided to go left.
I went out in the bay and reversed for an hour, trying to figure out what it would do, when, & why.
I decided I just had to be ready for anything in R. I think the ultimate solution would be a bigger, deeper rudder.
Some days I looked like I knew what I was doing, other days...not so much.

Hi Harden,welcome aboard!
What engine do you have, just curious. My boat walks to starboard in reverse.
The website AAC has a excellent write up on how to back a boat up by taking advantage of propwalk and rudder.

Rick,
If your boat consistently walks to starboard in reverse, that almost certainly means you have a left handed prop, putting you in the minority of Morgan owners with that configuration. Most Morgans have a right handed prop but it is by no means a rule.

Side question out of curiosity - What engine/trans are you running? Is it the Hurth trans? My prop is right handed and the trans doesn’t have any cooling and I’m curious if yours does. I have read that the left handed prop configuration requires transmission cooling.

One way to get rid of your prop walk is to get a feathering prop like Max Prop. It also makes the boat sail significantly faster, especially in light air.

The only downside is they cost about 5 times more than a fixed prop.

I was so used to my severe prop walk that I used it to my advantage. And I was always thinking about it when backing.

When I got the Max Prop the prop walk went to near-zero and now I’m still getting used to it not being there.;)

Travis, I have a right handed prop with Hurth transmission no cooler.
Hardin, I too have a 4108.
Rick,
Thanks for the reply. That is interesting. I wonder why yours consistently goes the other way??? I thought it was a pretty universal thing - right handed propeller backs to port, left handed backs to starboard. Maybe there are some other factors I don’t understand...
