Number of tank vents?

I own hull number 5 and noticed that the vent on my starboard water tank is some how clogged. No problem, I thought, I'll just clear the spider nests from the vent on the transom. That is when I noticed that I have 2 vents on the starboard side of the transom and only one on the port. By my count I have 4 tanks. 2 water, 1 fuel, and 1 holding.

I haven't had the chance to trace the vent hoses back to each vent, but are the water tanks cross connected for venting?

Do others have the same count of vents on their transoms?

Thanks

Marc

I have hull #53 and have 4 vents on the stern. Two on the port for fuel and the port water tank under the settee. Two on the stbd for holding and stbd water tank under the settee. The port water tank was an option out of the factory. Maybe your second water tank was added later with a vent in another location?

Just a note. I eliminated all but the waste vent on the stern. Didn’t want sea water in water or fuel tanks. The water vent tubes now just are open under the cockpit and the fuel vents (I added a 22 gal auxiliary tank) are in the cockpit coamings inside the cockpit.

I know you have done a lot of offshore sailing. Have you ever had seas come up against the stern where the vent fittings were endangered?

Jim

Jim, I haven’t ever been in seas that rose up and hit the stern like you describe. But then I have never had to use my Jordan series drogue, either. My change was probably unnecessary, but I have read of other boats being pooped.

I have. And when fueling afterwards some water came out the fuel vent. No oil slick with it, and to my knowledge no water made it into the tank. For all the vents there is a pretty long horizontal run before turning down the tanks.

Prior to installing a check valve in the fuel vent, I would sometimes have a small amount of fuel spit out, and into the water. I've wondered why that vent isn't somewhere that can't happen. Moving it elsewhere would be a good idea if you are thinking of it.
