MC 38 Yawls

Regarding MC 38 or 41 yawl rig versus a sloop: I'm hoping I might receive some comments about why some sailors prefer the yawl? Why others may not? Thanks in advance for your perspectives, Kevin

The yawl rig became popular in the mid to late 1950's with the racing sucess of Finisterre. The rig allowed for a mizzen stay sail which was not rated as sail area. This was benefical sailing downwind in the Bermuda race which she won three consecutive times. The rig also enables one to set the mizzen at anchor which helps keep the boat headed into the wind. On the down side there is alot more rigging and clutter for a sail with very limited driving force. If one wanted to split the rig for easier handleing of smaller sails a ketch rig would be more approprite.
