Refrigeration compressor Question

lee nicholas
I have rebuilt and re insulated my old ice box divided it in 1/3 and use a holding plate. I get great results and cold temps even in Florida heat >
Since i have a generator in my sail locker i was forced to find a spot for the refrig compressor.
Under the captain seat in a 384 I mounted a shelf and The compressor sits on top and half up the bulkhead space behind it .
I have installed a 4x4 vent to get rid of hot air, back there too.
I was wondering if i could mount a bilge blower to blow air on it or remove hot air.? Which would be better.? Blowing air on to the unit or Sucking the hot air away ?

Get the hot air out of the hull.
I've never seen a system without a condenser coil. I imagine that the genset produces a considerable amount of heat that might be tough to overcome for an air cooled unit
I have a Technautics holding plate system. I fashioned an aluminum sheet metal transition from the square dimensions of the condenser coil to a round 4" aluminum dryer duct which exits from the sail locker to a 4" screw in Beckson deck plate that exits high into the cockpit backrest. When not aboard and the system is off I just screw in the plate.
The compressor came with a muffin fan that draws air over compressor and condenser coil. I upgraded to a higher CFM fan recently after 15 years. It takes relatively cool air from inside the hull and blows it into the cockpit. I also have a vinyl half clam shell that fits over the plate when there might be rain.

Thank you so much John Upgrade the Mifflin fan just a great idea . Oh I have a condenser coil and fan , also have the same holding plate.
Last project was new bilge blowers and ALU dryer tubes to the in and out clam shells. I purchased the high speed ones and I let them on all the time the engine is on.
Its handy to put my hand by the vent and feel the heat or smell oil which is bad !

The compressor itself does not need much airflow, but the electronics module(attached on the side of the compressor does. Air coming from a wet bilge would have the corrosive salts along with it, I would suggest you fine another source of ambient temperature air for cooling.

My engine shaft area is bone dry. Like dust ! no rudder shaft leak ! No prop shaft leak at all ! I have dust. My ac does go into the bilge and the bilge pump gets it out quickly . I have two pumps in my bilge each with its own check valve and hose run and both exit the hull at different places !
I have purchased 3 high speed Miflin fans 3.5x3.5 One will be a exchange in the unit itself the other two will be in air and out oir in the area behind the stern capt seat !
