Tried to change the packing

in the shaft packing nut. Took two monkey wrenches and 4 days of PB Blaster and trying with the monkey wrenches to break that seal . Today i was successful sorta ! I got the nuts apart and i got one inch of a string like packing out . ! Now I own 2 cork screw packing removal tools. I tried and failed the corkscrew part is just to large ? What ?? the gap must be 1/8 I have never seen such a small Packing . So i did manage to get one ring in. A 3/16 piece. I have no leaks now . But i want 3 Gortex rings? This whole deal was a 8 hour day laying on the pilot berth space head in engine access panel . Hands on wrenches flashlight in my mouth. Yes I have a LED light in the engine room also . But real bright where i needed it today !
Can it be true a 384 takes1/8 packing in the packing gland ????

Hey Lee, when I did my old 382 in the water, I was able to take the nut completely off the shaft and force 3/16 in. I got 3 layers. Each layer was an individual circle and I cut the connecting points an angle. Then the remaining layers the same way but rotate the splice so there is not a splice on top of another. It was a real pain to get if back on with all the packing and I ended up having to take one of the 3 layers out. No issues since.

I stopped as much water as I could by wrapping rags around the shaft to slow the water intrusion. It took me 4 hours as I had to take it back off and remove that 3rd layer.

My packing is done now. Wire brush the threads so the nut had some place to go . I had to use my dential instruments to remove that packing. I took out 3 rings and replaced 3 rings gortex no more leaks. ! Boats !!
I picked up my nuts and bolts today so as i can change out the chain plates bolts and nuts. looking for a roll of white Butyl also .. maybe AMAZON

We have a Campers World half mile up the road i usually get it there . Some times they only have gray ! I would rather white but it still is butyl tape .
Been using Butyl for 3 boats now. It always flexes , never unsticks, will not allow leaks.
