Perkins Diesel Problem

aistqm

Robert C. Lindenberger
I have an intermittent problem with my Perkins 4-108. After
being ran for a few hours it will begin racing for approximately
1 to 2 seconds about every hour. It has so far, always returned
to the speed which I have set and never ran away. I believe the
problem to be assiciated with the hydaulic govenor. Any advice
on the problem or where I may find a shop manual is appreciated.

Jay,
I sure don't want to sound like a know it all on this one, becasue I sure ain't, but I had those exact symptoms aboard Katahdin. I changed the Racor and the engine fuel filter. That alone solved the problem. I do have an engine service manual which I can copy and snail mail you pages, if you wish. Contact me with your address and I can send it along. Best of luck - I hope, for your sake, that it is the filters.

<div>Like Ed I am surely no expert so put this in the "for-what-it's worth" department. It may be something as simple as a small air leak. I have experience had similar problems on both a volvo and and my present yanmar. In both cases it was a small air leak either in the filter, or one of the lines from the tank to the filter (loose hose clamp in one case). I just fixed the leak and re-bled the injectors and that fixed the problem.Good luck. Hope it's simple.Vic C.

Thanks guys. I have changed the Racor so I will now try the engine filter and start looking for air leaks.

On two different occasions I have had the engine race for a few seconds and then return to normal speed. Both times I had the fuel filter replaced and that solved the problem. The occasions were in different years. The first time it was replaced by a perkins shop in annapolis. The mechanic said that ditry filters would cause the problem. More fuel gets through occasionally. I'm about to replace them again. I think my fuel is dirtier then it should be.

<div>Not directly related, but I have a problem with the engine smoking at times. It looks like a "blue" smoke which Nigel Calder says is the result of oil glazing on cylinder walls, which in turn is caused by running the engine with no load and thus running at too low a temperature. Anyone had this problem? What was the result?

we have had several problems with the 1000 series wherby no 6 cyinder conrod goes through the bloc destroying the engine it would appear that it is related to oil starvation on the crankshaft big en journel has anybody else experianced same

<div>I just purchased a Rawson 30 with a perkins 108 marine in it. It has a heat exchanger on it. I want to flush the fresh water cooling system and replace the coolant. I can not locate a drain cock. Can anyone tell me where to look for it?Thanks,Henry

Hello perkins owners, I am trying to locate an engine manual for a friend that owns a Perkins 4-154. If you could help me I would pass the information on to John. Thanks

You probably already have gotten the answer to your question, but since it is not posted here, I'll step in and say "highly unlikely". It is probably one of:
-&gt; cracked head or block (did the coolant freeze?)
-&gt; blown head gasket
-&gt; oil cooler (if equiped)
