    Classic 1979 Morgan 382

    East Hampton, NY
    Asking $39,000

    Year:1979
    Length:38'
    Engine/Fuel Type: Single / diesel
    Hull Material: Fiberglass
    Hull #: MRY22189M80A

The Morgan 382 was designed by America's Cup designer Ted Brewer and built by Charles Morgan the legendary yacht builder, number 221 of approximately 275 built. I've owned and sailed this boat out of East Hampton since 2006.

My favorite description: "A teardrop-shaped hull, wide beam, discreet reverse transom, and long overhangs might be the hallmarks of a vintage racing boat, but Ted Brewer designed the Morgan 38 as a cruiser. This is one of the classic fiberglass boats from the eighties, over-designed with a thick hull to withstand any kind of weather, the Morgan 38 sits low in the water for maximum stability, control and speed. This design has a well-earned reputation as an excellent boat for her build quality as well as her excellent sailing qualities."

Aided by her elongated fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, protected prop and balanced rig, she is a proven, capable offshore performer and has earned the respect of sailors across the globe. She has a substantial toe rail, wide uncluttered decks and excellent sea berths. She provides comfort both offshore and at anchor.

The cabin, in dark wood and deep blue upholstery, can only be described as classic, old-world and naval. This Morgan 38 is meant for a true sailor, DIYer and boat lover.

Now there is an ad on the Dallas Craigslist for $12,500. I flagged it as a scam.

I sold my boat. It's been a great 15 years owning my 1979 Morgan 38. I'll miss her!

How long did it take to sell? Final selling price? Private party?

I listed her on sailboatlistings.com and found a buyer privately and pretty quickly. I also tried eBay, Craigslist, and this board but very few inquiries. (I've heard that somebody copied my info and set it up on Craigslist in Dallas as a scam. My Craigslist listing was in New York - Eastern Long Island and expired in March with no inquiries.)

    Thanks Mark
I had a stroke and unfortunately have to sell our Morgan 382 after 10 wonderful seasons of sailing each summer. It will be listed on Yachtworld with a local broker. I’ll have to see if they will add sailboat listings.

Hi John, Sorry to hear about the health issues and sale of your boat. She is no doubt one of the fastest M38's around and she is well fitted out and in great condition. Your YouTube videos will help in the sale - I looked at them a lot before we got our 382.

We did sell ours just about this time last year after owning her for only 2 years. I used sailboatlistings.com and local craigslist with about equal hits from both. I started selling in early January, got an offer early April and closed a couple of weeks after that. I was anxious to sell as I was making a move on a trawler. So my pricing was aggressive, selling about half of where you are at, but my boat also had been sitting on the hard with a rainforest growing inside for a number of years when we got her, we spruced her up a lot. She was a stock original M382 with original engine, alcohol stove, no ST winches, old (maybe original) sails and furling, no electronics, not very attractive cushions etc.

I think over a dozen folks looked at it, some in their 20's looking for liveaboard/adventure, some older looking for sailing off in the sunset (like the ultimate buyer). Most found issues with the small V birth (ours was originally over under but was converted to double at the lower level which made for a very small/tight berth). Most folks did not want to deal with a lot of upgrading nor projects so your boat will have an advantage there. It was also on YW though a broker friend but it only generated a couple of hits - he still complains about a tough sailboat market.

Where I was selling by myself the logistics of showing it got to be a pain so using a good broker on your end will help avoid that hassle. The Morgans are a lot of sailboat for the money. Best of luck - a very happy and fortunate new owner is no doubt out there! Just like Mark's buyer who got a beautiful and very well equipped boat!

Mark Hampton, Satori is now also for sale on Craigslist both in Vermont and Rhode Island! I emailed them about it and I'm going to see if I can give them the run around and waste their time. I HATE scammers!
